According to USA Today High School Sports, Maxey has focused his early recruiting efforts on fellow Texan Cade Cunningham. Cunningham is the No. 2 player in the 2020 class according to the 247 Sports composite rankings, and he is major Kentucky target for good reason.
“Coach Cal loves versatile players and he’s a 6-7 point guard, but he can play 1-4,” Maxey said of Cunningham. “That’s what makes him such a great player because you can’t really stop him because he hurts you in so many ways. I’ve gotta get him. He’s my No. 1 target in 2020.”
It is a bit curious that Maxey is working on the 2020 class, as all signs point to him being on an NBA roster by the time Cunningham would set foot on campus. Regardless, he is a very charismatic young man that seems to naturally bring people together, and his efforts may end up having an impact on Kentucky’s roster once his time is done.
Cunningham has had a great summer with his EYBL team, averaging over 25 points and nearly seven rebounds per game. The final ten teams on his list are Texas, Duke, North Carolina, Kentucky, Kansas, Washington, Memphis, Oklahoma State, Florida, and Virginia.
“We’ve got the Texas connection, so I’m just trying to get him to come down here and take this visit,” Maxey said of his connection to Cunningham. “I know Coach Cal will take care of him here.”
Maxey is going to be an excellent player for the Wildcats this season, but he may be an even better ambassador for the program.
