"Well, we did some things different and that's what's been fun. We ran a play today, that got us four baskets, that I just put in. That's what makes it fun for me. I have to figure out ways that we can get some freebies because of this team. We cannot get our own shot. We can't. We can't give it to a guard, he's not going to get by anybody. It's not how this team has to play. Defensively, the same thing. I love it. I told them, this is what makes it fun for me. Coming up with things defensively and offensively that can help them that they go in the game and the stuff works."
So, Cal is basically saying that, up until now, he didn't put in any offensive plays, nor any defensive wrinkles based upon who they are playing.

I guess he really does rely upon superior talent/athleticism. Wow.

I wonder sometimes if the kids on court really listen and pay attention to what he is yelling on the sideline.

So he basically did what the fans have been saying since the second or third game of the season. Run some freaking plays instead of just dribbling around hoping the opponent gets bored and falls asleep.

He is ridiculous. I think if you are a good coach you still have plays even if you have superior talent. Then no one has a chance to beat you. What the heck does he get paid 9 mil for? I have always said, and will continue to say, Cal is an average coach at best. HE can develop guys for the NBA, and he used to be able to recruit the top guys; but now what is he? Just an average coach who cannot coach his teams up. And, isn't just great for him to belittle his players while he praises himself for doing something he should have done before the season started. He said himself before the season that we had no shooters; didn't he think he might need some plays? This is one of the most embarrassing seasons ever. The final fours and championship that we have while Cal has been here has been despite the coaching many times. I can remember watching every game in 2012 and being frustrated alot because we would get big leads, and then Cal would start to "coach" and we would hold on. The championship game was even that way. I don't think I'm ready for him to go this year, especially with the crazy year it has been. But if next year is not better in the coaching department, then I am ready for him to go. And I would be all for hiring some young coach like a Nate Oats, or get Kenny Payne back her as the head guy.

I don't know how anybody can watch so many of Cal's teams go from fumbling, tentative, and just plain bad in November to what is usually one of the most efficient offenses and defenses in the country by March. This year is different, in so many ways, but in general, that kind of improvement requires a LOT of coaching. Man, I wish those guys would stick around for 3-4 years of coaching!

For sure, we agree that Cal's offensive approach is dated, and could use an update. But great teams use frameworks more than set plays. They play within the framework of an offense and generate a good look. Set plays for in-bounds passes, after time-outs, and certain key situations, yes. But not for every trip down the floor. That is high school ball.

When Cal's teams finally understand his framework, they execute it very efficiently. Some teams lack the personnel with the right skills/IQ do this, and this one was sure slow to pick it up, but I see much better offensive flow now than a month ago.

Cal's talk is always about "brothers" and "having each other's back", which is the mindset he is trying to use to meld a team out of what is usually a collection of massive egos. So we don't hear him talking about the drills, the plays, etc. But, it is clear to me that he most definitely "coaches up" his players, and does so remarkably quickly.

As a prime example, Karl Anthony-Townes was really, really bad when the season started. But by the end, we successfully ran almost every possession through him. He became a totally dominant player. That wasn't KAT doing it by himself. That required coaching!

This year, I think we can see improvement in many players. Jackson is ballin', nearly averaging a double-double over the last 3 games. Mintz is an assassin. BJ is playing much more controlled on the offensive end, and is actually playing good defense now. Sarr is even posting up stronger than ever before. Brooks has emerged (IMO) as one of the most explosive players on the team. And on and on.

So, no. I don't agree that Cal can't coach. I just wish he could change his recruiting strategy a little and target some solid 4-stars that will stay a few years, and I wish he would update his offensive framework. But I most certainly don't want him to go.

Does anyone watch the NBA? No reason to ever watch a full game - just turn it on for the last two minutes. That's what Cal's teams are like. No need to watch the first part of the season - just tune in in March.

I'm just retting really tired of mediocre UK teams for most of the season. And I have gotten zero joy out of this season so far. I could've watched Family Guy reruns instead of the games and got more joy. I used to eat, sleep and breath UK basketball. Now, I don't really care until March.

You are right, though, Tip. I would love Cal if he would just quit this NBA factory program and build lasting, competitive teams every year and play for the University of Kentucky instead of the NBA draft.

What I mean in regards to Cal is his game planning, adjustments, offensive and defensive strategies are average. I believe he does develop players, and makes them better. I just don't think he is a great game coach, game planner.
