Kentucky blew four of the last five games by falling apart in the final four minutes of action. In losses to Auburn, Georgia, Alabama and Missouri, the Cats were very much alive at the four-minute mark, only to give it all away with costly mistakes and missed shots down the stretch.
Finishing the final four minutes has been a major point of emphasis for John Calipari in practices and whenever he speaks publicly. On Thursday he rattled off many of the turnovers and bad shots that cost his team a couple of SEC victories, then said Kentucky lacks “dagger throwers” like he’s had in the past.
“I need some dagger throwers,” Calipari told his call-in show listeners. “Who will make the shot? We had shots against Alabama, we had shots against Georgia, we had shots (against Mizzou); we had shots to get us back (in the game), but the ones to be the dagger in them, we missed.”
Calipari said he wants a player who will say, “Give me the ball, watch this dagger,” not, “Oh my gosh, will I make this?”.
“You cannot be afraid of missing. You’re not playing not to miss. You’re playing to throw that dagger in.”
Looking back on some of his great dagger throwers, Malik Monk earned dagger praise from Calipari following that 47-point game, a narrow victory over UNC in Las Vegas. Tyler Herro threw a few daggers in his year too. Aaron Harrison, he was a Dagger God. The list goes on.

You have to recruit 'em, coach. You cannot create them when they are not there.

Cal is dead on. Much of it is in the attitude of the shooter. Playing "not to lose" is a much different attitude from playing to win. This team has never developed the confidence in itself to actually follow through and make a habit of winning. Dagger throwers are needed.

The guys who think they can make it, usually miss. The guys who CAN make it, are either not in the game, or never get a pass.
Medium probability of hitting + high confidence:
Allen Brooks Sarr
Medium probability of hitting + little confidence:
Mintz Ware
Low probability of hitting + high confidence
Boston Askew
Other:
Jackson. Great on lobs and put-backs, but terrible shooting from the floor. [ 02-06-2021, 02:43 PM: Message edited by: Tiptree ]

That's true, unless your name happens to be Dontaie Allen. Allen started off taking great 3-point shots. Then Cal benched him for not shooting, which is total BS because the couple of shots Allen turned down would've been bad shots. So now Allen shoots bad shots or he'll be yanked, but now Cal yanks him for missing a couple.
Bottom line - Cal needs to RUN SOME PLAYS to get his best shooter some good looks. But we all know that isn't going to happen.

Cal instills “fear of missing” in the players that he constantly benches after a couple of misses. He may say, “well, they were going right at him on defense, so I had to sit him”. Sound familiar? Cal is not good at creating a TEAM. But at least he gets kids to the NBA on the fast track. ☹️

Last night there was just one shot that Askew threw to Allen that he had time to set before shooting. Otherwise Cal wants him to shoot immediately when he gets the ball. But the other teams know he can make it if you give him 2-3 seconds to get set. They cover him very well. After his 20+ game they all know to beat UK you have to stick like glue to Allen. Shame to say this but everyone knows what to do to stop Allen but I guess Cal will never know.
