This is not much fun right now. For the second time this season, Kentucky lost a basketball game by a single point and they are now 1-4 in games decided by one-possession. Even with a six-point lead with two minutes remaining, the Wildcats found a way to lose another game and things are looking bleak for this 4-9 team.

Kentucky was able to slow the game down and forced Georgia to play at their tempo, but still could not get a win. Turnovers might have been the main culprit as the Bulldogs feasted on fast break points at Stegeman Coliseum to snap a very long losing streak against Kentucky. It is certainly starting to feel like rock bottom keeps getting lower. It’s hard to win games when you are constantly scoring in the 60s.

Offense
Kentucky scored 62 points in 66 possessions scoring .939 points per trip. UK was a very effective 23-of-44 from two-point range with 36 paint points, 13 makes from the free throw line and 17 second chance points off of 15 offensive rebounds. However, they were just 7-of-13 on lay-ups and had their warts really show up in two specific areas.

UK was a brutal 1-of-13 from three-point range and committed 17 turnovers in 66 possessions. Every fourth trip up the floor led to a giveaway which resulted in Georgia scoring 25 points off turnovers and 20 fast break points. Not only can they not score, but the offense is severely limiting the defense.

I still find it hard to believe that our best outside shooter only attempted three shots. I missed the first half so I didn't see most of Boston's buckets, but what I saw of the highlights is that a lot of his buckets were put-back rebounds from a missed shot where he was basically uncovered. Boston put up good numbers last night, but I still think Cal needs to limit his playing time. His shot with about a minute to go was just a very pathetic attempt. We got outscored 7-0 in the last two minutes of the game. Cal needs to look at who is on the floor at crunch time.

Boston got a few nice mid-range jumpers curling off of screens. He had a nice game. Maybe he should continue to come off the bench!

Allen just wasn't in this game. He passed up a couple of threes (not great looks, but he had space to shoot), and just wasn't aggressive to get open. I wonder if there is some bad chemistry between him and Boston? Or between him and Askew/Mintz? But, in any case, Askew and Mintz didn't make any great effort to get him the ball, and he kinda gave up.

Even though we "held" Georgia to the 60s (they are usually a high-scoring team), I saw way too many defensive lapses. There was one sequence where Jackson missed a shot, then was late getting back on defense, then got lost of offense and picked one of our own players on the baseline. That is just bad basketball. I like Jackson's athleticism and timing on blocks, but come on.

Given the talent (such as it is), something is wrong in this team. Scoring in the 60s is ridiculous. It can't all be Cal when we shoot so poorly, although certainly he shoulders some of the blame for the offensive scheme. But, it has to be more than just bad shooting. Are there big egos/personality conflicts derailing things?

Allen did not get open many times but when he was open they weren't looking for him. Askew doesn't belong on the floor this year, he would have been better off staying in high school. Nobody is helping anyone look good enough to go to the NBA this year. Next years team may look like the year the Harrisons and the others came back for a 2nd year.
