Kentucky headed to Starkville really needing a win and it feels like that’s something we’ve said multiple times in the last few games. The Wildcats felt like they needed an extra game earlier this week and it resulted in an exhibition game being scheduled against Transylvania. Coming out of that, we heard Dontaie Allen had a really good game and it seemed like we could see him for the first real time to kick off the New Year.
Well, the Pendleton County product delivered.
Allen scored 20 of his 23 points in the last 20 minutes of the game and helped lead a comeback after John Calipari was ejected in the second half. The final result being a 78-73 win over Mississippi State in double overtime in a game that was very ugly. However, that does not matter right now because this team really just needed a W and some positive momentum.
Offense Kentucky scored 78 points in 79 possessions posting .987 points per trip. It was another inefficient offensive performance for this team as they only attempted eight free throws in 50 minutes and shot a ghastly 21-of-56 from two-point range. However, they were 12-of-13 on shots at the rim and made 11 three-pointers to keep them within in striking distance. It’s always nice to go plus-18 from downtown.
Dontaie Allen led the team with a career-high 23 points with seven makes from downtown and a team-high plus-nine in the +/- column. The redshirt freshman provided some much needed floor spacing for the offense and made multiple big shots throughout the game.
