When Dontaie Allen lit-up Starkville with 23 points on 7/11 three-point shooting, he also set off an explosion in his home state of Kentucky.

During Kentucky’s six-game losing streak the Wildcats struggled to get anything going offensively. UK didn’t crack 65 points once during that stretch, and while B.J. Boston and Terrence Clarke shot–and bricked–at free will, the Falmouth, Kentucky native watched on.

His 40 ppg average and Mr. Kentucky Basketball accolades from his time at Pendleton County High School were meaningless, and no matter how poorly Kentucky shot the ball, or how well Allen looked in practice, there was no way he was going to see the floor.

Dontaie Allen only saw 19 minutes in the first seven games going, shooting just two of five from behind the arc. While Allen sat quietly, and to his credit very patiently, the BBN grew restless. As the losses piled up, more people came out of the woodwork with pitchforks.

Why was Dontaie Allen not playing?

Well, if you asked the guy in the big chair you would get a ridiculous excuse or an unreasonable explanation. “We need to let the five stars guys in front of him miss” or “He didn’t play in the first half, so I couldn’t play him in the second half.”

After Kentucky’s loss to Louisville and some fans ready to pack his bags, Coach Cal finally gave in to the critics, and to seemingly much chagrin, he played the Kentucky kid. With the entire state behind him and with the integrity of the BBN on his shoulders, Dontaie Allen came in and dropped 23 on the Bulldogs, proving the Kentucky Kids CAN make an impact for the greatest tradition in college basketball.

Does everyone know the difference between a scorer and a shooter? I'm not a scientific expert but in my opinion a shooter is a guy who makes a lot of shots 8-10 or more feet from the basket, usually. A scorer is someone who racks up a lot of points. They may be from deep, inside, on drives, rebounds, layups or dunks. He gets his points where ever they may come. He may not be that great at the 15-18 foot shots but he will get them one way or another.

Good example is Allen was known as a shooter coming out of high school. He proved he could hit the 3 with consistency. Boston was a scorer in high school. He usually was the teams leading point man. He has never been known as a 3 point man. He was a driver in high school and he is learning, I hope, that things aren't quite as easy to do that in college.

All the shooter needs is a chance to show what he can do. A scorer will have to prove he can still score in college as he did in high school. Boston is close to being there. He may still be our leading scorer as he was during the first half dozen games. But think if he is doing this good at scoring what he could do if he increased his point totals. He has taken more shots than anyone else on the team to get to the totals he has. He needs to convert a lot more of those misses to justify his minutes Maybe if he loses some of those minutes to Allen he'll think harder about what he is doing on the floor.
