KY outscored Arkansas 29-19 after Cal got thrown out of the game and KY went to a matchup 2-3 zone!
The odd thing is, AR is known for hitting their 3's and I think they only hit 1 in the final 8 minutes of the game!

Makes you wonder why Cal is so against adjusting his defense. I truly believe if he would mix in zone at times this team would definitely have fewer losses. I just don't get it. I wonder if the players said to go zone?

I think Cal needs to listen to his assistants more. Keep recruiting the way he does, but have more input from the other coaches. This team has as good a chance as any one to win this year. It's wide open, and if Cal will be open to a little change on his part we would really have a shot. Tweak the offense and defense and we could be very good. Keep doing the same as usual and we will be average.

We’ve been debating this for years. Calipari doesn’t like Zones! He’s so stubborn that he refuses to stay in a zone for more than one or two trips.
I’ve been asking for him to play some zone occasionally now for 7-8 years.

In this case, the zone was put in place as a tactical adjustment to protect Ashton from getting his fifth foul. It was clear that we had to have him on the floor or our offense just didn't work, but we couldn't afford to let him guard his man one-on-one.

But, the zone worked for more than just keeping our foul trouble in check. Arkansas' uncharacteristic failure to hit a bunch of threes meant the zone killed their only remaining offensive option, which was helter-skeleter-get-into-the-paint. Arkansas was clearly intimidated by our length/size, and didn't have a good game plan for the paint, but that was all they had when the three-balls wouldn't fall. And the zone just messed that up completely.

The zone was very soft (not much of a match-up), almost daring Arkansas to launch what would have been uncontested threes. I don't think we should play a zone like that against most teams, because they would scorch us from the arc. But in this case, on this night, it worked.

And once again we seemed to stop being aggressive in the second half. We had scored just EIGHT points in the second half when Cal got tossed with only 8:19 left in the game! After he got tossed we scored 29 points!!! Here's what Kenny Payne said after the game:

"It's an execution game (at that point)," Payne said. "The last thing they're expecting us to do is rebound and push the ball up the court. Well, that's what we did. By doing that, we got a couple layups, we got a wide-open 3 and it opened the game up for us and gave us a cushion." <link>

At least SOMEBODY understands the importance of being aggressive. Maybe Payne should be the in-game coach and Cal should just recruit.

Great observation. That has a been a problem with our Cats for the last several years. Get a lead, slow down. Sometimes hang on for win, other times blow the game. I just don't understand it. We shouldn't think about running clock until 3 minutes or less. There have been countless games under Cal where we have had a 16 point lead, and then hold on and win by 6-8. Just keep the foot on the pedal.

Slowing the game down is one of my pet peeves. If we get a double digit lead you know that it's coming.
