Kentucky’s 2017 recruiting class is No. 1 in the 247Sports Composite. And it’s easy to understand why after the release of USA TODAY’s all-state teams.
Out of the six recruits Kentucky landed that played full high school seasons (basically, leaving out Hamidou Diallo), a whopping four weren’t just named to their state’s first teams, they were named state player of the year.
That includes P.J. Washington, the No. 14 player in the 247Sports Composite and USA TODAY’s Player of the Year in Nevada.
“The future Kentucky Wildcat excelled on the national stage this past season, leading Findlay Prep to a berth in the DICK’S High School Nationals championship game,” USA TODAY wrote of Washington. “An American Family Insurance ALL-USA Boys Basketball Second Team selection, Washington produced 19.6 points and 9.4 rebounds per game as a senior.”
Nick Richards, the No. 17 player in the 247Sports Composite, earned the same honor for New Jersey.
“The state’s only McDonald’s All-American and the NJ.Com Player of the Year, Richards emerged as a interior force this season, leading the Celtics to a Tournament of Champions title,” USA TODAY wrote. “The Kentucky-bound big man averaged 12.3 points and 7.5 rebounds per game.”
The leader of the Kentucky class and the No. 23 player in the 247Sports Composite, Quade Green was the pick for Pennsylvania.
“Philadelphia’s first McDonald’s All-American in eight years, Green averaged 20.7 points, 7.9 assists, 4.4 rebounds and 2.0 steals, earning a spot on the American Family Insurance ALL-USA Boys Basketball Third Team,” USA TODAY noted about Green’s season. A” Kentucky commit and a gold medal winner with the U18 National Team, he led the Saints to their fourth consecutive state title.”
And finally, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, the No. 28 player in the 247Sports Composite, was named the top player in Tennessee.
“Gilgeous-Alexander, who will play for Kentucky next season, averaged 18.4 points, 4.8 assists and 4.4 rebounds per game as a senior. An American Family Insurance ALL-USA Boys Basketball Third Team selection, he led the Hawks (31-7) to victory at the USA National Prep Basketball Championship in Myrtle Beach,” USA TODAY wrote. Link
