I don't mean to complain after a great win like that but I'm beginning to have doubts about our defense. UCLA pretty much scored at will and so did UNC. Oh well, as long as we can score more than the other team I guess we will be OK.

Handy, I agree. I thought this would be an elite defensive team, with our quickness, speed, and length. But defense will come... and the offense will also get better. That has got to scare the bejebus out of our opponents!

Yeah, it's not like Cal's teams to give up an opponent shooting over 50% from the floor!

We're giving up too many points in the paint!

I just finished watching the game on tivo, and I have to say our defense wasn't as bad as the score would lead you to believe. There were alot of great shots made by UNC tonight that just beat good defense. Jackson had the advantage over Briscoe, and yes, Willis and Gabriel need to get better, but I thought tonight was more about amazing offense than bad defense. And I am a stickler for defense.

I agree, ukman. UNC is a mighty good team and sometimes it's just hard to stop a team like that.

I make no claim at being an expert but when you give up one hundred points in a college game, IMO, you're playing poor defense or your opponent is so lucky that particular night they should probably buy a lotto ticket before the evening is over.

I am not at all saying it was great defense. I do believe it was better than the UCLA game, and I believe there were alot of great shots made over some pretty solid defense. We can definitely improve a long way, but just don't think it was as bad as the score might lead you to believe.

UCLA and UNC are both top teams. Our bigest problem in both the UCLA and UNC games was not being able to stop the drive to the hoop. We gave up a lot of 3 pointers also but these teams can really shoot. They made a lot of them with a hand in their face. My problem with this team is with several guys, like Cal said, are just not that good yet. Humphries made a few good plays but he is just not ready to go up against an elite center. Gabriel goes at it hard but he is not ready for teams like UNC and UCLA. Willis is giving it a good try but he is also not good enough to stop guys like we played tonight. The second half started off very slow compared to how we played in the forst half. It looked like we were playing slow down trying to decrease the number of plays UNC got. I picked us to beat UCLA and UNC so I am 50-50. I also picked us to lose to Louisville and Kansas. Looks like we'll have to beat one of them now to even me up. I am hoping we can go down there Wednesday and beat the birds.

A good center will eat Humphries up and Willis just doesn't have the heart to play against a good defensive team. Tonight Willis played 19 minutes and had "1" rebound and 1 basket and looked like he didn't know what to do on either side of the ball.

Willis and Gabriel still struggling guarding their man. Leaf in the UCLA game, and Jackson tonight in the UNC game!

Willis has a lot of work to do on his defense and rebounding as 1 board in 19 minutes is awfully weak especially when your 6'9" tall.

Depending on the competition, it seems like the tougher the competition the less apt Willis is to even look to take a shot!

He is very poor at getting open. If you can't make your own shot you have to be able to get open for a feed. He mostly just hangs around the corner watching the game.

I would have thought Cal would have gotten through to Willis by now however maybe he can by tournament time.

When Willis focuses more on rebounding, running the floor, and driving the ball to the basket (which he is surprisingly good at!), then his overall game improves. Plus, his man can't just prevent the trey, he has to guard him honestly.

I really think that Cal's open proclamation that the guards need to shoot most of the shots was a very bad idea, and it has shown up in our out-of-balance shooting stats. I hope he publicly retracts that misbegotten idea, and gets his bigs much more involved in the offense, and not just as a last option.

Cal has watched too many pro games. The guards do take a lot of the shots in that league!

Im not sure if our defense is not up to par or its the fact that we average 13 seconds per possession on the offensive end. When playing teams like UCLA and UNC you are going to give up buckets when you play that fast. As we progress I believe we will tighten it up and be tough to beat come march. I see this team looking a lot like UCONNS team with Kemba Walker when they ran the table.

In the last couple games it seems they are trying to get it to Bam more often for a dunk.

and every time we put the ball through the hoop in 15 seconds, by regulation, the other team gets a turn with it....... I agree with Who?, teams like UNC and UCLA, get up and down the floor nearly as quick as we do... and they both have the TALENT to make a better % of their shots than most teams we will face........

There are very few teams that can run with us, and SCORE with us.......

and another thing........ Bam played a Great Game against a Senior Big Man who has played 3 years against very solid teams in the ACC... I just as happy with Humphries... His minutes were GOLDEN with Ban in foul trouble

I agree. There will probably not be a bigger or deeper front court than ours. Our problem is they are inexperienced. I believe I can name the 2 guys Cal made go hug Monk after the game. None other than Gabriel and Humphries. He really made up for their weak play. If we didn't have those two we would be in a world of hurt, but they are just not at the level they need to be. Hope they can improve omce we get into the SEC schedule.
