Lyles last game was his best game by far and if he keeps playing like that we are going to be that much better.
Trey Lyles had a career-best 18 points for Kentucky in Wednesday’s win at Mississippi State and was dominant in the first half when he had 13 points.
He finished the game 7-for-12 from the field and 4-for-4 at the foul line. He also had six rebounds, two assist, one block and one assist. Even better for UK, in 21 minutes he did not make a turnover as all of his elite skills for a 6-10 player were showcased.
Yet Kentucky coach John Calipari wants more — a lot more — from the player he says has “crazy” skills for his size.
“I want him to dominate. See, he began this game and I thought he was going to. He missed that one over-the-top layup. Like, dunk the ball. Just turn your hand that way and dunk it. Your elbow is above the rim,” said Calipari. “But my thing to him is
“But I’m going to say it again: It’s really hard to play that way. Woo. Can I just play like, ‘I’ll make a play every fourth time down the floor. Like, I’ll do something crazy and they’ll all look and say, wow, he’s playing good.’ No. We play every possession and that’s what makes it hard for these kids.”
It could be even harder for Lyles because he missed three Southeastern Conference games with strep throat. However, he says he’s definitely back 100 percent now.
“Lifting weights and doing extra stuff to try and get back to where I was, and I feel like I’m very close to that,” the former Indiana Mr. Basketball said.
Caliipari said Lyles is finally “getting back to being who he is” after missing time with the illness.
“I don’t know exactly how long he was out, but he was out awhile. And then, you’re not only out, you’re sick, so the one thing we made sure was he didn’t lose weight. We fed him and we had people over there daily making sure, checking his weight three times a day because that is what I feared,” Calipari said. “If his weight went down 15-20 pounds he may never recover from it. But he kept his weight steady so that was good.”
Lyles said he was just “being aggressive and attacking the basket” against State.
“I thought he was really good,” Calipari said. “He passed up some 15-footers. The guys were throwing him the ball and yelling at him to shoot it. He’s turning it down. I’m like, ‘Why aren’t you shooting?’ He should have had 25 (points) today. But I thought he played well.
“I still think at the end of the day he’ll be the X-factor for us. He’ll be the guy that they struggle to guard, that has offensive skills, that can still give us great size and rebounding ability. Let’s say this is the start, maybe, of something.

He should average a double-double if he puts his mind to it.

I think I've seen where he's projected as a first round draft choice!

It sure doesn't hurt if Lyles can kick his game up a notch or two for the team and himself. [ 02-27-2015, 11:19 PM: Message edited by: catmandoo ]
