Folks first off please forgive me for reading about a Duke artical concerning Josh McRoberts.
http://media.www.dukechronicle.com/media/storage/paper 884/news/2007/07/25/Commentary/Moore.Or.Less.Correct-2927087.shtml
MCROBERTS AND DUKE ARE NOT THE ISSUE OR SUBJECT OF WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT HERE! ITS THE STATEMENTS IN THE WRITERS ARTICLE I AM QUESTIONING!
In the article the writer said this:
"But there used to be a time in college basketball when players weren't expected to lead teams until their junior or senior year. The game hasn't changed. The physical and emotional maturity of teenagers hasn't changed. Only the expectations have changed. The special players have become the rule and the guys who need time to adapt their game to this level have suddenly become flops."
I have some thoughts on those statements. First of all I think the kids and the game have changed tremendously!
I believe the reason peoples expectations are higher now for newcomers to excel is due to the fact of all the hype of them coming into a program, and also the fact that now these so called stars only stay a year or two then bolt to the NBA, is a couple of the reasons folks expect more from these kids.
The recruiting game if vastly different than it was years ago. Coaches jobs rely on getting a certain kid or class just to maintain his job.
And when these kids come in with the hype they recieve, people expect them to be one and done, or two years and out. They expect in that short period of time, that certain goals be achieved.
I think kids have changed and not sure its for the better. I think they tend to lack the emotional maturity and especially so by the time they reach the NBA. I think a lot of these kids are so catered to now days, they have become prim donas, spoiled, and elevated to celberty status before they even dribble their first colligiate basketball. Also I think the times are so different that it creates the ultra high expectations of the fans and alumni!
Am I wrong on this? I am not sure I agree with the statements he makes. [ 07-25-2007, 03:58 PM: Message edited by: UNC-HEELS ]

I have to agree with you. 20 years ago we didn't have all these kids wanting to go to the NBA after 1 year. We didn't even have all the kids going right out of high school as they did until the rule changed. $$$$$$$$$$$ there's the answer.

Suggest you have the defibrillators handy, UNC-Heels because that's a very good post worthy of TCD and the reading. Mostly because it deals with the state of college BB, doesn't deal with a particular team (especially one that is an avowed foe of UK) and isn't self-serving. You make some good points, some with which I agree, some not. I didn't even mind that it focused on Duke as an example. I must admit the name of the author caused some consternation: Micheal Moore. I need to give it some more thought and then will probably reply further. Gracias.
