Even though Stephen Johnson threw for 310 yards in last week’s win over New Mexico State after starter Drew Barker was injured, Kentucky coach Mark Stoops indicated today that Barker will be the starter on Saturday against South Carolina if he is healthy.
“He’s listed as the starter on the depth chart for a reason,” Stoops said Monday.
Stoops revealed that Barker had an MRI to get a closer look at his back and UK is consulting with a specialist. The coach said Barker had “lingering” back problems from this summer and some popped up again after the loss at Florida two weeks ago.
Stoops said “it wasn’t just one hit” that caused Barker’s issue but was rather a chronic problem. The coach did say he anticipated Johnson being part of the game plan even if Barker is healthy.

Johnson is heck of a good back-up and would bet he will get a his share of the minutes.

Johnson should be the starter, I like Drew, but he's like a deer in the headlights since he got sacked on the first play of the game at Florida.

Johnson and Snell both are gamers... they make tough plays in real-game situations. Barker may "practice" better, but he has proven to be too inconsistent in the game. After lighting up Southern Miss in the first half, he has been completely ineffective.
Give Johnson the chance to lead this team. And keep Snell in the backfield!

By chance Stoops has found out he has two second stringers who are undoubtedly going to be starters soon. Johnson and Snell are the type guys this program has been trying to find. Now we will see if the coaches know how to utilize them for the benefit of the team. Just my opinion, but I think Barker and Toles were over rated coming out of high school. Towles had his shot. Barker was just getting started and got hurt in the UF game and was knocked out of the next game.
I wouldnt call Barker over rated. His career is just getting started. I hope he heals up and gets back out on the field. I am rooting for whomever is the starter to do well. I am pulling for Stephen Johnson to have a great game and great season. But, just as Barker ( a more conventional pocket passer)got injured, a running QB like Johnson could go down with an injury very quickly on any play.

I would doubt if Barker is at the top of the depth chart today. He is out for 3-5 weeks. We shall see if Johnson and Snell make any difference on Saturday.
