Whether a team loses or wins in any sport, one thing will always be consistent — the team’s fans will end up complaining about the officiating. We all have done it and it’s hard to avoid, even when your team sits on the season undefeated. I am sure officiating is a job easier said than done, especially when you have millions of eyes staring at your every move.

Well. The NBA is about to make it easier on some officials, and not so much easier on others, by making game reports on what they thought of the officiating public. Starting this Monday and continuing throughout the playoffs, the league is going to release play-by-play reports of all calls, and no-calls, in the final 2 minutes of close games. They have been practicing this for a while now, but the information had not previously been public information.

Each play will be reviewed by a senior basketball operations manager or senior referee manger and will be graded as correct or incorrect, along with a comment and video link. Mike Bantom, the NBA’s executive vice president of referee operations seems excited to make the upcoming changes and you can read his quotes about why the change is taking place here.

Making referees accountable for their actions in the public eye is a great step for basketball in general. Instead of just having an argument about game calling with no evidence, we now will have evidence to back it up as to if a ref is not good.

Could you imagine what this could do for college basketball?

Doug Shows (not pictured above) wouldn’t be too happy. That’s for sure.
