He is a very special athlete and probably will be a major league baseball player in the near future. He is joining some very talented former athletes.

A.J. Reed's latest honor, although not national, is a big one: Southeastern Conference Male Athlete of the Year. That puts the University of Kentucky baseball star in the company of six Heisman Trophy winners, six No. 1 overall draft picks and three individual Olympic gold medalists who've won the award.

Reed also joins Wildcats legends such as Anthony Davis (2012), Tim Couch (1999) and Jamal Mashburn (1993) in that impressive fraternity. He is UK's seventh winner of SEC Male or Female Athlete of the Year, an honor voted on by the league's athletic directors since 1976.

Gymnast Jenny Hansen (1995) and basketball players Kyle Macy (1980) and Jack Givens (1978) are the Cats' other winners. Reed is one of just five baseball-specific players to win the award. A native of Terre Haute, Ind., he has won four of college baseball's five major National Player of the Year honors — with the Golden Spikes still to be announced — and the John Olerud Award as the top two-way player in the country.

Reed led the nation in home runs (23), slugging percentage (.735) and OPS (1.211) and also led the SEC in pitching victories (12), RBI (73), walks (49), total bases (164) and on-base percentage (.476). He's the first player in league history to lead the SEC in home runs and wins and is trying to become the conference's third unanimous National Player of the Year.

He pretty much is a shoe in for National Player of the Year.
