He is a good coach and believes in his players.

Has Mark Stoops lost this Kentucky football team?

After a 5-1 start, the Wildcats now 5-6 heading into an open week before they close the season at Louisville in a must-win situation to get bowl eligible.

They are coming off a 63-31 loss to Georgia followed by a 50-14 loss at Tennessee Saturday. That’s the first time in school history that UK has given up at least 50 points in consecutive games.

Think about that. Remember some of the Hal Mumme defenses that supposedly had no defense. Yet those teams never gave up 50 or more points in back to back games. Neither did the teams under Joker Phillips — or any other Kentucky coach.

Don’t forget, too, that UK coach Mark Stoops is a defensive specialist. That’s where he made his mark — coaching championship defenses. But not at Kentucky so far.

The Volunteers had averaged 235.7 yards passing coming into Saturday’s game. After three quarters, they have 297 yards. By that time UK had forced one punt, allowed over 1,000 yards and yielded 12 touchdowns in four quarters against Georgia and three against Tennessee.

That’s why many UK fans are now openly wondering if this team has quit on Stoops.

What makes it worse is that Stoops is winless since Stoops got his contract extension, including Tennessee’s most lopsided win over UK in Knoxville since a 59-20 win in 2000.

But Stoops insisted after Saturday’s loss that he had not lost his team — much like he did after the big loss to Georgia a week earlier.

“I’m proud of this team, and that’s hard to say,” said Stoops in his postgame press conference. “Y’all will point out all the negatives, and that’s your job, I understand that, believe me. I’m a big boy and that goes with the territory. But I really am, I’m proud of them. They did some good things.”

Like what? Let Stoops explain.

“We’re 5-6 and we’re in the middle of a tough stretch right now. I don’t think — and I would never say this before the game, and I’m never gonna give an out for any of us — we didn’t have a lot in our tank,” Stoops said.

It would be the kiss of death for him to tell the press that his team has quit. That means he would have quit on his team!
Just have to keep battling. Things will eventually start to roll our way!

It's going to be a war against Louisville and should be a very good game.

Hopefully the weather be nice for this one. I'd hate to have to beat UL on a nasty day! [Big Grin]
