Sorry to hear that and what makes it even worse is that it sounds like it might even be more games two games.

During his first 12 years as a college coach, Neal Brown never had a player suffer an eye injury. Now he’s already had two at Kentucky as he gets set to start his second season as offensive coordinator.

Last year it was receiver Javess Blue who got hit in the eye with a football during a pregame session. Now Jeff Badet will miss at least the first two games after being hit in the eye recently with a tennis ball.

“We really believe catching tennis balls are great for eye-hand coordination,” said Brown. “It’s something (coach Hal) Mumme brought here when I was playing. Others have used it and I’ve used it and never had an issue. I’ve never heard of it being an issue for anybody else, either.”

Head coach Mark Stoops hopes Badet just misses two games.

“It is getting better,” Stoops said after Friday’s practice. “It’s not as bad as it could have been, and it’s getting better. From what I understand, these injuries take some time, and we have to be very careful with that, that that type of injury.”

Badet had 22 catches for 285 yards and touchdown last year as a true freshman. He injured his leg in spring practice and has been used only sparingly in practice this month.

“He has not practiced since I want to say the fourth or fifth day in camp, so we’ve been preparing without him,” Brown said. “He was never out there making a whole bunch of plays, so it’s not a letdown from a team standpoint.

“I’m disappointed for him because he put in a lot of work to come back from the ankle injury he suffered in the spring, but he’ll be ready. Game two or game three, I expect him to be out there with us.”

Kentucky also will not have sophomore receiver Alex Montgomery as Brown had originally hoped when the season started. He has missed all of camp rehabilitating a torn anterior cruciate knee ligament in his knee.Other than those two, Stoops expects everyone else to be available to play.

Safety goggles will probably be standard issue, from now on, for the tennis ball drill.
