We are going to be a young team but we are building for the future and that is good.

As expected, Kentucky will play five true freshmen wide receivers and two true freshmen running backs this year.

Coach Mark Stoops confirmed Friday that receivers Dorian Baker, Blake Bone, Garrett Johnson, Thaddeus Snodgrass and T.V. Williams will all play along with backs Mikel Horton and Stanley “Boom” Williams. Williams, Snodgrass and Horton have all been at UK since January.

“We’ve had some wideouts that are beat up a little bit and we recruited those guys to play,” offensive coordinator Neal Brown said. “That was a position of need,. A couple of them may be in a position to start. We’ll see.”

Stoops also said that defensive tackle Matt Elam and defensive back Kendall Randolph would also play.

That’s nine total true freshmen — or four less than Stoops said might play at UK’s Media Day earlier this month.

Stoops did say he would like to redshirt true freshman Drew Barker now that Patrick Towles has been named the starting quarterback.

“I think that would be in his best interest and our best interest,” Stoops said. “We’ll see how that goes. He will prepare to play in a backup role, and if we can save him through the season that’s what we’d like to do.”

“We’re not going to put him in in any junk minutes by any means,” Brown said.

Defensive lineman Lloyd Tubman had been turning heads with his play but Stoops said an injury set him back and he now is likely to redshirt. The same seems true for tight end Darryl Long, another player many thought might play due to UK’s lack of depth.

The difference than years past is these freshmen are talented and will make us better.
