I am sure that they are taking the risk of having advanced weapons on the black market very seriously. Ukraine is incredibly corrupt and mostly run by a few very rich oligarchs who essentially run organized crime syndicates as well as "real" businesses.

The article says we are training Ukrainian forces in Germany, and indicates that CIA operatives are training them within Ukraine. It also mentions some "commando" units from non-US NATO countries, which sounds like an absolutely insane idea to me. If those commandos are captured, Putin would have every reason to broaden the war, and then the US would definitely be drawn in.

Do we have "other" US forces in Ukraine? Past history suggests that we would, but I hope somebody has enough sense to put the kabash on that idea. In fact, I would pull the CIA operatives out. Giving them massive aid and training in Germany is enough!
