Are all of you staying at home?

This is my thrid straight week of working from home and i'll continue to do so until the govt gives the ok. In the last three weeks i've been to the grocery store twice, to my niece's house to fix a plumbing leak, and today I just went to get gas for the lawnmower. Didn't touch a thing at the gas station. I took two paper towels and hand sanitizer and didn't directly touch anything.

I also found an N95 mask in my basement this week - i bought it a couple years ago for drywall work when i finished my basement. Could've sworn i had two of them but only found one. I will definitely wear the mask the next time i have to go to a store. I've definitely been drinking more - having one little glass of bourbon after work with a cigar. There's nothing to do other than watch tv and sit on the deck trying to find sports news that just doesn't exist.

Can't wait until this is over.

Yes indeed I'm staying home 24/7, EXCEPT to fill my mower gas cans and two trips to Walmart to get a pick up order. I may continue to use that even after this has all blown over. I've also been through the Dairy Queen drive thru twice, and a couple of times to the restaurant where I drink coffee in ordinary times. They are closed for dine in, but you can call in an order and they bring it out to the car.

I flew back from my LA client on Friday the 13th [Eek!] -- been working from home ever since. My wife and kids are all at home too... wife teaches her physics classes online, youngest daughter takes her classes from UC San Diego online, and oldest daughter has been quarantining in her room, with most of her time spent on endless video calls with her friends. Our renter downstairs is also a professor, and he teaches his courses online as well. That means, for most of the day, five of us are streaming video on tools like Zoom, Teams, or Skype. I am damn glad I upgraded our internet service before all this started!

We all have been cooped up here for the duration. Sure has been interesting. I have become accustomed to being gone during the week, so it feels strange being home all the time. Also, my wife sits across our living room from me and often her classes are at the same time as my meetings... it can get noisy!

Norm, We started ordering from Walmart for pickup, but now we can't get a pickup time slot for the life of us. So, we have to brave the stores in person. We have been trying to visit smaller groceries to avoid the crush of humanity in Walmart, but it still makes me nervous.

Tip, try Walmart again. I'd been having the same problem, but when I looked this morning, they had added a box to click: "Next Available time". Lo and behold! They had two openings Sunday afternoon. I sangged one and will do the pick up Sunday afternoon between 2 and 3!

How is golf being handled in Bama, RLT? Up here in N. Ky. the course my league plays at is closed. Others are open for walking only - no carts. Then there are others that make each person take their own cart. You usually pay over the phone, too, as they have like a two-person limit in the clubhouse. Tee times are 16 minutes apart and the holes are upside down so the ball doesn't go in them and you can't remove the flags. It's kind of crazy.

I work for KY Utilities, where I've been employed since '90. Nothing has changed for me either. we're in the middle of spring outages. (An outage is where a unit, coal fired, is taken off to do major repairs that can't be accomplished while the unit is running.

One huge problem for us is the fact that during outage season we have a lot of transient contract employees who may show up from anywhere in the country. These guys normally live in hotels, or bring their own camper with them to live in while the work is being done. A lot of these guys ( I say guys because the labor force is probably 50 males per 1 female) will leave at lunch time to try and find food. We have recently hired a catering company to provide meals for approx. 700 each day.

Since the beginning of these social changes our company has been preparing to sequester the employees on site if necessary. So far it hasn't come to that.

Anyway, other than being able to worship on Sunday at my church and an occasional eating meals out, my life hasn't been altered all that much. Working 50-60 hours a week keeping the lights on.

My wife works in the Pharmacy at Walmart. Her hours have changed quite a bit, they've changed the way they operate now too. Her particular pharmacy doesn't have a drive thru but they are now offering curb side service as long as you are paying with plastic.

You guys stay safe and I'll continue to try to keep the lights on for you guys so you can watch your afternoon soap operas! LOL

I was supposed to play golf in Warsaw, KY today but the temperatures have me altering my golf plans until tomorrow. They are allowing 1 person per golf cart unless you arrived at the course together, doesn't make much sense if you can ride in the same vehicle together that you can't ride in a cart together!

MH, what course were you supposed to play? I don't know the geography extremely well down there but i've played Perry Park, which I love, and Fairway Golf Course (Wheatley).

Sugar bay, its just a little bit south of Warsaw on your way to the original interstate exit, before the race track was built, to Warsaw. I work in Ghent, which is about 15 miles west of Warsaw.

It's very comparable to Wheatley. Typical fescue fairways. It was originally a rock quarry, so there are valleys and mounds between fairways. During wet seasons it has a few holes where water hazard comes into play that normally isn't there in summer and fall.

I play at silver wings on Fort Rucker. One person per cart, the holes have the foam pool noodles wrapped around them. If you hit the flag it's good. No rakes in the sand traps and the drink girl doesn't come around, but other than that it's business as usual.

I like playing new courses, i just hate afterwards saying "if i knew this course i would shot 9 strokes better." [Smile]

Several years ago I got invited to play this country club near my house. One particular par-5 i hit a good drive right down the middle. For my second shot there was a bit of a mound in between my ball and the green and i knew there was water to the left of the green. So instead of going for the green i decided to lay up with a 4-iron. I hit it perfect, landing over the mound in (what i thought) was the middle of the fairway. As i walked over the mound my ball was nowhere to be found, and I was then able to see that the water near the green came back down the fairway about 100 yards and kind of cut the fairway in half. 2-stroke penalty. [Frown]

I could stay at home, but I'm sure our customers would rather have their lights stay on!!!!

[Razz] [Razz] [Razz] Unlike 100 years ago, Electricity is more of a necessity than a luxury. And Golf, well, as big as a golf course is, if you can't social distance on a golf course then we need to talk.

I feel the same way about a beach. Explain to me why social distancing can't take place on a beach? If you travel with your family then obviously you might be closer than 6', but I usually don't hang out with others at the beach!

No, I'm not staying at home. I've been working as normal since this all began, but yesterday we got news passed down from the chosen ones that our healthcare organization we work for has taken a massive hit financially this quarter due to the pandemic. We're going to have losses in the hundreds of millions of dollars. Now, I'm just a lowly paramedic out here but this loss gets rolled downhill, as most poopie-storms tend to do. All employees will be required to take a weeks worth of vacation over the next 2 months, and their positions will not be covered while they're gone. I actually offered to take a furlough for 8 weeks to save all of the folks who work on my shift from having to take time off...some simply don't have that amount of vacation, some are saving theirs up for maternity leave, etc. I was denied, though, so will continue to toe the line and be a good little soldier.

As an aside, I am done with the quarantine. I think what's happening to our country and economy are much worse than anything covid can do. The cure is going to be worse than the problem. Let everyone out, get exposure to the virus. Keep the old folks and immunocompromised at home, but we simply cannot keep the country shut down indefinitely.

Thank you for your service during this horrible time CFIY !!!

I too believe we need to get back to normal at least by May 1st. When I do go out now I don't wear a mask but I don't hang around people (stay 5-6 feet away as much as I can. I went to the mountains a few days ago and found a space where my gf and I could get out and have a picnic by the river and no one came close to us (well except for the game warden who was checking to see if we were fishing). There were some areas where there were 15-20 cars in the area and lots of people around but mostly it was 1 to 3 or 4 cars in places.

Stay safe CFIY as well as everyone else.

While I was out today I was near a Walmart and decided to run in real quick, wearing my mask. I was stunned. I saw not one employee wearing any type of mask, and probably 1 out of 10 people were wearing masks. I saw people who were at least near 60 or older just walking around like an ordinary Saturday. It's like business as usual for most people. I just don't get it. I have been wondering lately why the number of infected in Ky is not slowing down as quickly as I would've thought. Now I know. People just don't care.

I'm beginning to think you are right because the most powerful, wealthiest and most tech advanced nation in the history of the planet is running in 51 different directions trying to figure schit out!.

Since we are now leading the world in both number of cases and deaths, the "you're on your own" approached don't seem to be working...I guess covid forgot to read the constitution.

Since this is a "political statement, assume you are referring to the President? If so, he has done a great job in keeping an "organized" approach in tackling this pandemic. The "experts" "models" predicted over 200,000 deaths.

What more would you have him do?

Models change daily, depending on available data...it could still hit 200,000 because data is something we are woefully short on due to lack of testing. We still have no clue how bad things are.

Just read where S. Korea tested 91recovered
patients...they all tested positive...so much for immunity testing.

Not for a millisecond. Even if China has 5x what they have reported it is still less than the US. That kind of coverup would be difficult even for China.

MM,

I just don't know where you get your facts. According to the Johns Hopkins Coronavirus map, the US has now tested 2,688,766 people. South Korea has tested fewer than 500,000 people, less than 1/5 the number we have tested, or roughly the same percentage of their population.

So far, there have been 110,052 deaths from COVID-19. Worldwide. When you look at comparable populations and wealth, Europe has far more deaths than the US, and far more active cases. China's numbers are more likely off by a factor of 10... stories of funeral parlors with coffins stacked up in Wuhan don't jibe with the modest numbers "officially" reported.

One interesting note is that China signed the "Phase I" trade deal only after getting the US to agree to a clause that said that China did not have to buy all the goods they promised to buy from the US if there was an "act of God, pandemic, ...". This was in January, so they forced that clause in AFTER they knew what was coming. They did NOT close their borders to air travel, they did nothing to prevent the spread of the virus to the rest of the world. They sealed off Wuhan province, lied about the problem repeatedly, bought off the WHO, and watched as the world was set afire by the virus they released.

In addition, they began to corner the market on PPE and other essentials to fight the virus, leaving the rest of us hapless. If you want to be upset at someone, try directing your ire at the Chinese, not Trump!

The good news today is that the number of cases worldwide seems to have hit a peak and we may be seeing a gradual decline. The bad news is that the world will now have to deal with the economic disaster it has created. There is nothing like panic to force bad decisions, and I am afraid most nations have lost their minds.

So, what's made the difference?...When you started testing...the single most important thing.

From mid-Jan. to the End of Feb. the US had tested fewer than 4,000 people of the available 160,000 cdc test. Remember, our first confirmed case was Jan 20...6 WEEKS later and we have tested less than 4,000 people. Talking about a classic case of closing the gate after the cows are out!

Where do you think we would be today if we had tested 2,688,766 people by the end of Feb instead of 4,000....I see no reason why we couldn't have or shouldn't have.

S. Korea was capable of testing 10,000/day virtually from the get go. Either they were given a heads up or they just know what they're doing and we don't!

Even to this day there is no national plan for testing...Trump said he didn't think testing was necessary...WTF!

I just love when people that have nothing to do with anything start saying what they would do or wouldn't do... love hearing Hollywood people tell me where I am wrong and what I should be doing. Mark Walberg actually told Hollywood to back off because they didn't live in the everyday persons world. Last report has Beijing China having 432 confirmed cases and only 8 deaths. How is that possible ??? They are either lying through their teeth (which I believe) or they have something to do with how it spread (which I totally believe). Something really fishy about this whole thing. If you look at Africa as a continent they haven't had as much as the more civilized countries … hmmmmmm only 400 or so deaths in Africa (51 countries). Something really hinky going on with this virus.

I didn't say it helped us now. "You" keep saying that we have the most cases and deaths of any country, I am just saying that probably isn't correct. Also we have approximately 1,000 deaths more than Italy yet around 5 times the population. I am just saying stats can be misleading.
I am also reading they think we have hit the peak and hopefully going down. Not sure if this turns out to be true or not or if we have rebounds from it in the future. Just saying that is what is being said.

It isn't so much stating the facts, MM. It is the palpable fear that permeates your posts.

We are all aware of ALL the things we can do to protect ourselves. Beyond that, it is out of our hands. Spreading fear about things none of us can control is doing nobody any favors.

We are all doing what we deem is the appropriate measures of self-protection -- social distancing, staying in our home waaaay more than we want, ordering things online instead of going out and shopping, and washing EVERYTHING -- mail, packages, groceries, and especially, hands.

You, nor I, can change the facts beyond that. I would give Trump a B+ in his actions during this pandemic (NOT his words, mind you). Could he have done better? Yes, as the facts have unfolded, earlier intervention would have been better. And, I think history will reveal that the economic damage we have brought upon our country will exceed the prevention we bought with it.

Dr. Fauci is an expert in his field. He knows what measures can be taken to slow the spread of this virus. We ALL know those things now, and for the most part, we have done them. But Dr. Fauci is not God, nor is he qualified to direct a nation's self-destruction to fulfill his plan. His expertise, like all specialists, is very deep but very narrow. He has a GREAT on-camera presence, and I am glad he is helping us, but this has become far more than an epidemilogical issue. It is now an issue of national economic catastrophe. Even if we pull sharply out of the crisis, we just incurred an additional $2.2 billion in debt, and we are about to add another $2.3 billion on top of that. And there is no guarantee that those billions of dollars of debt will even work.

So, let's all sit back, talk sports and politics, and let the pandemic play out. There just really isn't much more we can do.

So, what's made the difference?...When you started testing...the single most important thig.
If the do nothing Democrats would have been concerned with the virus, instead of the impeachment sham,we could have sealed off the country. President Trump shut down commercial flights from China in January. All the Democrats cared about was impeachment. They called him a racist. Democrats need to look in the mirror and take responsibility for what they've done.

The power is out here and all I have is mamma’s IPad, which I know nothing about...Don’t know how to copy and paste so I’ll do the best I can.

Tip:

First, let me apologize for my last snarky post.

Fear don’t necessarily mean to run, hide and cower down, it can serve to motivate us to heighten our awareness, strengthen our resolve and quicken our response.

Complacency, on the other hand, is a recipe for disaster.

‘Dr. Fauci is an expert in his field. He knows what measures can be taken to slow the spread of this virus. We ALL know those things now, and for the most part, we have done them”.

And they’re working! ...this is not one of those times where “it’s good enough for government work “. Until we get a vaccine that’s all we have.

quote:
I would give Trump a B+ in his actions during this pandemic
Please elaborate on that...I really want to know why?

Trump was acquitted Feb 5th. The Senate took a 5-day weekend, then came back and began confirming federal judges, members of Congress found time to dump and buy stocks...miraculously just before the crash and Trump played golf and held rallies while, at the same time, downplaying the seriousness of the virus....that’s the Democrats fault?

Yeah, MM, and if you want to do a little research you will see that on Saturday Feb. 29th Willie Giest had Dr. Fauci on the Today show and asked him point blank is this serious enough that we need to be changing the way we live? His answer is not at this time but things could change quickly. So, just 6 short weeks ago even our so called experts were saying to live our lives normally!

In 6 short weeks we’ve gone from 1 death to over 20,000...this virus has a habit of doing that!

I think we need to quit laying blame on anyone … the virus is a killer and no one knew what is was going to be like and we can blame anyone and everyone but President Trump couldn't have stopped it nor could President Obama or any other President. Things happen and we can always look back and say they should have done this and should have done that. All that means is it is hind sight and too late. We have to move forward and fight it day to day and adjust as we go. There have been over 40,000 maybe up to 60,000 deaths caused by the flu in 2019-1020 but no one seems to worry about that or the 35,000+ average deaths by cars the past 4-5 years (that I checked). Why are we still driving ??? Death is going to happen and in lots of ways from cancer, the flu, cars, suicide, heart attacks and we can go on and on but to lay blame is the easy way out IMHO.
We learn from what we have done and haven't done and we go on from there. I think President Trump has done as good of a job as he could not knowing what this was going to turn into. Would some other President done better ??? Maybe but that is all conjecture, absolutely so way to know for sure and I am sure there have been many Presidents that would have done worse.
Hopefully we are getting to the point of the deaths going downhill (yes they may come back with a rebound but we are learning more everyday).
It is time we step up and learn from and fight the virus not lay blame, that is a never ending fight that I am sure the politians will continue well after this is all over. They hate Trump for whatever reasons and that won't change. If it was a Dem President in office the Reps would be doing some of the same things I am sure. Again it is time to empty the damn swamp and get people in office that care about the people of the United States not the ones that can get them the votes they want !!!
Sorry for the novel... just tired of all the laying of blame.

Tip, I'm not insensitive to the economic impact caused by covid. It's already horrendous and going to get worse. My business-owner brother has closed his doors and is not sure if he will even reopen.

If you had cancer would you stop treatment half-way through just because the tumor was shrinking but not gone? What do you think the outcome would be?...not only for you but your family as well.

How many people die of hunger every day? The FAO estimates that as many as 25,000 people lose their lives every day as a result of hunger. That adds up to roughly 9.1 million people who die of starvation each year.Sep 11, 2015

Coronavirus is peanuts compared to this “epidemic”. Rarely, if ever do we hear about this in the news. I know America first and all that and starvation is relatively rare in our country but still.

Sometimes it’s helpful to keep things in perspective, at least for me.

plus the "never Trumpers" want the economy shut down based on solely the upcoming election. Sabotaging the Presidents agenda starting with the fake dossier and now thru using the pandemic to bolster their agenda is shameful especially since all of these accusations to smear trump have failed so far to date.. No man in history has had this many "plots" against him without any proof just show imo how strong President is!

ladies and gentlemen the "left" continues to be on the march to get rid of trump.

I think the better question would be "If I had cancer, but the treatment would ruin my family financially forever, would I stop treatment half-way"?

I will not answer that personally, but that is far more akin to what we are facing now.

I've gotta tell you; I'm really worried about this huge spending bill. Not for me, because I'm older than dirt, and it probably won't affect Millie and me, but for my kids, grands and greats. I doubt it will get back to where in was in December for years and years, if ever. 2.3 trillion, divided by a population of 325 million comes out to about $9826 per person. They are sending out $1200 to each eligible person. that leaves about 9.1 trillion. Where is the rest going?

I told my wife if they send me a $1200 check i might not cash it. I don't need it, and it'll just be taxable income that i'll end up paying for later. If they directly deposit it into my bank then i might not claim it as income. If they don't ask for my permission to put it in my account, to me that's just found money. [Wink]
