The North Carolina waters are now coming into South Carolina and I am having to evacuate. I don't think there is any doubt that my house will be flooded. River which is 2 miles from my home is running wild and not supposed to crest till Friday or Saturday at 5 feet above known water levels. I have sandbagged my doors, garage etc but if the water gets as high as the authorities say it will, I am in deep doo doo. We do not carry flood insurance in my neighborhood because we are out of the flood plane. I have national guard, fire department and fema people in my neighborhood already. Good to see the FEMA people already on the job down here, I was impressed with their operation. My wife has already gone to stay with friends, I will be leaving my house early this afternoon or evening, depending on how quick the water gets here. Wish me luck, going to be a tough week coming up.

According to the experts, the river will not crest until sunday which will be about 6 feet above where it is now. If that is true, there will be little left of my house. And just when I thought we had survived hurricane Florence with only minor damage. You just never know.

Ray if ur river is anything like the one in New Bern I fear for all of you. That river is so large you cant even see the other side at places.

You just described it Ed. I had to leave at 7pm this evening. Have a friend who lives in DC and his house is empty right now so my life will be normal other than I won't be at home and won't even be able to go back and look at it till the end of next week. With a Sunday crest and the receding, I expect it to be Thursday or Friday of next week before I get to see the damage. I have sand bags by the doors and garages but if what the forecasters come true, the water will get up 3 to 5 feet within my house and I will lose about everything. I am getting too old for this. Highest flood level ever recorded here is 17 feet and they are forecasting between 23 and 24 feet yet to come.

I went through a flood in the 1970's while living in Eastern Ky. It got about 6" in my home and ruined virtually everything...hope the forecasters are wrong in your case..it ain't a pretty sight losing everything...good luck SCWC.

MM, where in Eastern Ky are you from. I am from Southeastern Kentucky, Floyd County, county seat Prestonsburg. Left there many years ago and lived my adult life in Washington DC area but the mountain roots will always be there.

I am very fortunate, have a friend who lives in DC and has a house here in Myrtle Beach that he has loaned me so at least I am not having to shell out motel bills.

I will keep all posted here, am going to see if I can get back to my house this morning to pick up a few things but doubt that I can because of water levels.

Now I know why you and I are so far apart politically. All my Kentucky relatives still living in Ky are big time democrats, I was raised to be one myself but broke away at an early age. I had a brother who was assistant superintendent of Harlan County Schools some 25 years ago. My sister in law, Frances Prater actually taught or was a guidance counselor at Harlan High School.

Not my relatives....Republicans all the way. I vote my conscience...always have. I've voted for as many Republicans as Democrats for POTUS.

I guess my political leanings nowadays come from my wife...a retired social worker from right here in Tuscaloosa. It's either that or sleep in the yard. [Smile]

What is your brother's name I may know him?

Harlan High School is/was an independent city school. The rest of the county always considered it a "rich man's" school.

SCWC and MM,

my wife lived in Inez, KY (Martin County) until we got married in 1965. Her Dad was the basketball coach at Inez for many years. He was a Democrat and her Mother was a Republican.

I worked in Inez in my first medical practice in 1969-1971. We moved to Alabama in 1971. She and I still have good memories of Eastern Kentucky.

My brother Dillard Prater was principal of Cumberland High School many years ago, they upgraded him to assistant superintendent because he would not fire the football coach like the boosters wanted so the only thing they could do because of his tenure was get him moved to school board offices. He and his wife moved from Cumberland to Harlan where they lived until about ten years ago when they relocated to Florida.

Clydeh, my Maytown basketball team had a 22 and 0 record before going into Inez for a game back in 1957. We lost our first game of the season there but found out that two of the Inez alumni officiated the game which of course our side considered rather one sided. It was a one point loss. We ended the season with a 28-3 record and were ranked number 4 in the state but the Asiatic Flu hit our team during the Regional Tournament and Oil Springs, a team we had beaten by a score of 110 to 66 the last game of the regular season knocked us out of going to the State Tournament at Freedom hall in Louisville. Inez had some great basketball players back then.

ProBlue...do you remember a guy that played football for Belfry called "Spicer" back in the late 60's. I remember we played them one year and they beat us like we stole something. They only put Spicer in we they wanted to score.

That name Spicer doesn't ring a Bell. I played from 69-71.Belfry is still a power house 3A Football school. They have won 4 out of 5 State Championships in last 5 years.

When I was in grade school our school (millersburg} put the high school b ball state tournament on the school's intercom system system and all the kids listened to the games on radio.

Anyone else have that done at their school?

We are a basketball state! [Big Grin]

I listened to Maytown I think Ray. Was King Kelly from that area?

I went through that 1977 flood in Southeastern Kentucky as well. I lived in Bell County and went to Bell County High that was along the banks of the Cumberland River. I Have been in Georgia for the last 30 years or so. Very familiar with Cumberland and Harlan County.

As of 2pm today it is knocking on my door, all around my house but not in yet. I think I have about 8 more inches of it raising before it will enter my house. Supposed to crest tomorrow, Saturday evening or early Sunday morning. Keeping my fingers crossed. Fortunately I have a place to stay that does not cost me anything.It is out of my control now, all I can do is hope for the best, am trying to stay positive.

Handy, my senior year we actually averaged 86 points per game over a 31 game season. We even ran the fast break after our opponents scored. It was a long time ago but I still have fond memories of those high school days. I actually had a scholorship to Morehead State but was not mature enough to stick with it, lasted all of 10 days, entered the US Air Force for four years and continued my education after becoming a veteran,Uncle Sam helped me get through. I did learn to play basketball on an old dirt court though and was all of 17 years old when I graduated from high school.

I lived in Harrogate, Tn and Middlesboro from 1980-85. I worked for Consolidation Coal Co..moved to Tuscaloosa and went to work for Jim Walter Res in '85.....been here ever since.

I would just give anything if the Republicans and Democrats making the laws and governing our country could show each other some respect and work together like the good people do here on this forum. It is one thing to disagree with someone but as we all know, you can disagree and carry on in a highly respectful manner.

To all of you here on the Domain, some good news. The flood never got into my house, got onto my porch but never entered. I moved back in last night, have full electricity, TV, Wi Fi and all the necessaties of life. Thanks for all your thoughts and prayers during this 5 day ordeal.

Norm, I appreciate that. Nothing wrong with prayer in a time like this or anytime for that matter. The water did not reach the height the professionals thought it would or I would have had some 2 to 3 feet of water in my house.

BTW, in order of increasing lack of needed precision, "close" only counts in:
