Slowly but surely, things are getting back to normal.

Last week, the NCAA and SEC both announced that schools can begin allowing athletes back on to campus on June 8th. We already know the UK football team plans to start returning then.

Now, the men’s basketball team is targeting a return to UK on the week of June 22nd, according to KSR’s Jack Pilgrim.

In conversations with the upcoming 2020-21 roster and parents this week, UK head coach John Calipari laid out a tentative plan to return to Lexington, with the week of June 22 being a target date.

Once arriving on campus, the goal is for players to stay isolated in the Wildcat Coal Lodge and Joe Craft Center, providing them an opportunity to get acclimated and train with one another while following proper CDC guidelines. One option on the table is keeping players on campus for the remainder of the summer, a way to minimize potential exposure to the virus while traveling home.

It makes sense to have the basketball team return a few weeks after the football team starts returning. Because there are so many football players — 30-40 of which are expected to return that first week — it’s smart to have the basketball team return later when there’s not as many incoming football players returning at the same time to ensure there’s not an outbreak of the coronavirus on campus.

Of course, nothing is set in stone just yet, as UK has yet to officially announce how athletes will be brought back to campus.
