Former Kentucky forward Kahlil Whitney has signed with Versus Management Team, he announced Tuesday.

Whitney left the program in late January after averaging just 3.3 points and 1.7 rebounds in 12.8 minutes per game. The Wildcats had switched to a three-guard lineup at Arkansas on Jan. 18 and went 13-2 the rest of the way to finish 25-6 overall and outright regular season champions of the SEC at 15-3.

A former McDonald's All-American who was ranked No. 11 overall in the 2019 class by the 247Sports Composite, Whitney began the season in the starting lineup but saw his playing time dwindle as he shot just 37.1 percent overall, 25 percent from three-point range and 43.5 percent from the free throw line while committing nearly twice as many turnovers (15) as assists (8). Whitney had logged double-digit minutes in just four of his last 10 outings, scoring just 14 total points over that span.

Whitney abruptly announced he was leaving the program on Jan. 24 but never entered his name into the NCAA Transfer Portal. On April 10, Whitney announced he was foregoing his remaining college eligibility and entering the 2020 NBA Draft.

Kahlil is one example of why the NBA will not get rid of the one-year rule anytime soon. If the rule didn't exist, Whitney could've easily been drafted right at the back of the lottery, and then the NBA would've given him a guaranteed 3-year contract before finding out he isn't worth it. At least the one year of college allows NBA teams to see enough to avoid some very costly mistakes.

Paul, That is so true. The talent of one year guys get exposed to the scouts and their value might plummet.
