“I think it’ll all be fine. It’ll play out. I haven’t talked to him yet, but I know he’s back with the team. We were off yesterday and basically off today, so he maybe did some individuals with the group, but the No. 1 thing with all of these kids is the health and welfare of the kids. Things happen.”

Assistant Coach Kenny Payne later joined the show, and he reiterated the team has not met as a full group since their trip home from Gainesville. The players had Sunday to themselves, while Monday was spent with cardio, conditioning and individual shooting work. The full team will practice Tuesday to “fine tune the offense” and work on the defense before the Cats’ game on Friday.

Calipari called the weekend a “humbling experience” for Hagans, as he had to watch his team win without his contributions – “that’s the great news,” according to Coach Cal, but that’s not the only positive takeaway.

“Sometimes adversity hits and it’s good. Coaching in my mind is crisis management,” Calipari said. “If you really want to bring about change, it sometimes takes a crisis. Sometimes big, sometimes smaller. The crisis of ok, we’ve got to re-boot this.”

“These kids – and I’ve said it before – it’s gotten outrageous what kids have to deal with… [They have issues] like they’re 28 years old, and they’re 18 and 19,” Calipari added. “They’ve got the weight of the world on them… You’re at Kentucky, which means everything is highlighted. Every miss or make becomes something crazy.”

Coach Payne chimed in on the matter later in the show, and he agreed with his head coach regarding the difficulty of playing ball at the University of Kentucky.

It doesn't matter what level of ball that you are playing, it should be fun. When I coached rec ball I always tried to make it fun.
