There have been a lot of comparisons made between PJ Washington and EJ Montgomery lately after Montgomery took his NBA draft decision down to the wire. While I expect Montgomery to make a huge leap as a sophomore, I think it’s actually Ashton Hagans who has the best chance to follow Washington’s footsteps in posting an All-American-caliber second season. Calipari has only returned his starting point guard once at UK, and when he did, Andrew Harrison helped the 2014-15 Wildcats win their first 38 games.

Tyler Ulis did not start as a freshman, but he was arguably the best point guard in the country in year No. 2 in Calipari’s system. If Hagans can shoot well enough from 3-point range to force teams to guard him, I would not be shocked to see him contend for SEC Player of the Year. Don’t forget, Hagans arrived late to campus last summer after reclassifying. A full offseason of conditioning should better position him to take advantage of his athleticism on both ends of the court.
