According to Rivals reporter TJ Walker, Washington suffered a broken finger in January. While he was able to play through the pain, the injury will likely require surgery at some point.

As a true freshman, Washington averaged 10.8 points, 5.7 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game. He reached double figures in 11 of his last 12 games, a stretch in which UK went 9-3. He also finished his final game with 18 points and 15 rebounds in a narrow loss to K-State.

Many will remember all the missed free throws, but playing with a broken finger may help explain those struggles.

It looked to me like the "broken pinky" was on his left hand, not his shooting hand. I ain't buying this excuse. PJ's free throw stats prior to January were 40-65, roughly 62%. What was his excuse during this time frame?

Paul, this isn't for publication, but I have it from a good source that early in the season he was playing with a badly sprained pecker.

His left hand is for support only when shooting FF's. No excuse

The pecker thing is entirely another matter!!

He could not shoot free throws even when he started his first game at UK. I don't think the pinky finger being broke had any effect on his 8 for 20 against K State. I recall an article on KSR talking about his free throw shooting woes early in the season, how he was working on it daily but apparently he never improved that part of his game very much, broken pinky or not.

Is that where the term "peckerhead" comes from? The sprain causes a malfunction in the head which causes your eyesight to be off center? [Big Grin]

Cal and I both told him that was an injury he could play with. Unfortunately, our definition of "play with" was totally different than his. It led to some embarrassing moments.
