In 1954, 13 years before I was born, KY went 25-0 on the season. The only unbeaten team In KY history!

19-0 for KY is our third best start in history!

I remember that team well. They were invited to the NCAA but Cliff Hagan, Frank Ramsey and Lou Tsoropolus, all graduate students, would not be able to play and the team would have to play in the tournament without them. The rest of the team voted to go with those three voting not to go and Rupp told them he was not going to let a bunch of turds ruin a perfect season and he declined the NCAA invitation to play in the tournament. I totally agreed with his decision too. The NCAA at that time had no rule against GRaduate students playing in their tournament, it was a one year rule meant to keep Kentucky, who was just coming off a years suspension in 1953 because of the 51 point shaving scandal. Hagan, Ramsey and Tsoropolus did get to play three varsity years as it was called in those days because Freshmen had to play on a freshman squad. Old timers will know that, only putting it in for some of our younger posters and readers.

I remember the story well, I think I read Cawood's tale about that team. Where Rupp said he wasn't going to take a bunch of turds into the tourney if he couldn't have his entire team!

And the NCAA only enacted that Graduate Student not eligible rule for Kentucky and it was for the one year only. That was one of the many Kentucky NCAA rules passed in the fifties and sixties to try to hold Coach Rupp back basketball wise. The very next season after Hagan etc could not play in the NCAA, they enacted NCAA rules which did allow graduate students to play if they had not used their three years of varsity ball. It cost us another National Championship.

It is pretty amazing how they only did that for one year! They really did have it in for him, didn't they?

Coach Rupp did have enemies. He just won to many games!

Posted by catmandoo (Member # 1284) on 01-24-2015, 11:58 PM:

He won 876 games.

He was named National coach of the year 5 times.

Funny how some coaches can have enemies and some don't though!

Guys like Dean Smith won't have any wins erased because of improper academics though, will he?

Your probably right on Dean Smith, he is untouchable.

Hopefully Cal will keep coaching long enough to surpass him. I believe he is getting close to 800 wins.

Coach K is zeroing on a 1000 wins which will be tough to catch.

Posted by m hamilton (Member # 127) on 01-25-2015, 12:42 AM:

I read somewhere that CAl would have to coach until he was 70 to break a 1000 wins!

Posted by m hamilton (Member # 127) on 01-25-2015, 12:44 AM:

Cal is currently at 171 wins in Lexington alone!

Posted by m hamilton (Member # 127) on 01-25-2015, 12:47 AM:

According to WIki Cal won his 574 win today! So he hasn't won 600 games yet!

He had to show 42 vacated wins that aren't to his credit for the Camby situation and the Memphis debacle!

Posted by catmandoo (Member # 1284) on 01-25-2015, 10:50 AM:

He is about in 90th place all-time with 574 wins.

Rick Barnes, coach of Texas is a current coach who has more wins than Cal with 596 or there about.

I counted 38 coach's that still are still coaching that have more than 600 wins.

Cal has a ways to go but this year he is catching up. [Smile]

Like him or hate him Coach K has had one heck of run.

The fact that he's been at the same program for 30+ years says a little something about K

Says he needs to retire. [Wink]

John will be 55 years old this season. So he should have several good years still ahead of him!

HUGGINS IS UP THERE I HOPE RAT FACE LOSES TODAY. I DONT CARE WHAT HES DONE.

I am afraid Duke isn't going to have to much of a problem with the Red Storm.

Posted by m hamilton (Member # 127) on 01-25-2015, 01:44 PM:

Cal is 12 years younger than K

Posted by catmandoo (Member # 1284) on 01-25-2015, 01:47 PM:

Cal can pile up a lot of wins if he coachs another 12 years.

Posted by m hamilton (Member # 127) on 01-25-2015, 01:48 PM:

I'd say DUke wins with ease today actually!

Posted by catmandoo (Member # 1284) on 01-25-2015, 01:51 PM:

Duke will win by 18 or more.

I hope the Red Storm does a Crispen brothers on them.

Isn't that the truth! It was the best shooting I have ever seen as my wife and I were at Rupp they couldn't miss!

Posted by catmandoo (Member # 1284) on 01-25-2015, 02:14 PM:

I had to look it up but they went 13-23 from the 3 point line and ended up with 57 points between them. Un believable and Penn State beat us 73-68.

Yeah historic games take place like that from time to time. NOt sure St. Johns has any kind of shooters on their squad with that kind of shooting ability!

Posted by m hamilton (Member # 127) on 01-25-2015, 03:05 PM:

I'm with you Norm, I wouldn't care if K never won his 1000th game, but I just don't see it happening!

Posted by m hamilton (Member # 127) on 01-25-2015, 03:06 PM:

I'm not certain I see K retiring any day soon either! After watching some of these programs work anymore. The assistants do most of the manual work anymore. THe head coach is just the brains behind the operation!

I see Cal passing Barnes here in the next few seasons!

I really like the way BigBlueRev thinks!

That seems like a LOW number to me!

Hate to say it but coach K has a lot more wins coming before he retires.

We have won 11 of the 20 games we have played against Duke.

Posted by catmandoo (Member # 1284) on 01-26-2015, 07:03 PM:

The down side is we have lost 7 of the last 8 games we have played Duke since 1979.

No doubt about it the 98 win was a big one. The Tubster out coached him the whole game.
