Sage advice for sure but hard not to do.

James Young says Kentucky had a “good season” last year when the Wildcats reached the NCAA title game before losing to Connecticut. However, he admitted Tuesday during the John Calipari ProCamp that the preseason talk about the team going 40-0 and winning the title was overwhelming at times.

“Don’t listen at all,” Young said

when asked what he would tell the current Wildcats if the 40-0 talk surfaced again. “We kind of listened and it got to us and we had an up and down season.

“It was so big. It was everywhere. Everybody was talking about it (40-0). We listened to it.”

Young said one major mistake the 40-0 talk created was that players tried to do too much.

“We did try to please everybody,” Young, a first-round draft pick of the Boston Celtics, said. “Once we got past our slump, we just played.”

The players noted last season that once coach John Calipari “chilled” out, they also played better. But Young says this year’s team can expect the same Calipari intensity.

“Cal is just going to coach like he did last year. He expected a lot and he will do the same,” Young said.

He hoped to have a chance to play with former teammates and UK’s incoming freshmen today for the first time, but he said he believes UK will have a “great team” again.

“The have a lot of bigs. If they get in foul trouble, they have enough talent on the bench to push through. They should do some great things,” Young said.
