He is going to be a special player and a team leader both on and off the court.

UK freshman Karl Towns was named the 2014 Gatorade Male High School Athlete of the Year at a ceremony in Los Angeles on Tuesday night.

Towns — a 7-footer from New Jersey — is the seventh basketball player to win the award since 2003. Past recipients include LeBron James, Dwight Howard, Andrew Wiggins and former Kentucky guard Brandon Knight, who was there Tuesday to see Towns receive his award.

The Gatorade selection panel judges athletes on “athletic excellence, academic achievement and exemplary character.”

Towns averaged 20.9 points, 13.4 rebounds and 6.2 blocks per game during his senior season while leading St. Joseph to a 30-2 record and state championship. He also graduated with a near-4.0 grade-point average.

He’s been on UK’s campus for a few weeks as the team prepares for its upcoming trip to the Bahamas, where the Cats will play six exhibition games against international competition.
