I have to give him some credit, he gave a lot of
compliments to the CATS and their fans today. I
didn't know he graduated from bama, I thought he
was a dukie.

I just wish Bobby Knight would have had the courage to show up!

glad he didn't show up, I as far as I am concerned I wouldn't care if he ever showed up, he is not any fun to listen to anyway. I know Vitale is a fair weather friend, but man he had a lot of great compliments on UK,Cal,our fans, and Lexington. It is refreshing regardless of where it comes from. I like Vitales enthusiasm anyway.

Knight did a program today saying the Kansas big man - Alridge(sic) - was the best in the nation.

Not sure if he has watched Cousins lately!!

I remeber him slapping the side of Joe Hall's head after we beat.

Posted by catmandoo (Member # 1284) on 02-14-2010, 02:26 PM:

Ed, Knight has been big on Aldrich all season..

Posted by catmandoo (Member # 1284) on 02-14-2010, 02:26 PM:

You can bet he won't even mention Cousins name!

Let's face it Knight is a nut job who has a big time hate in everthing Kentucky does or stands for!

I don't remember if it was an NCAA tourney game or not, but there was a telephone on the scorers bench very near where knight wa coaching on teh sidelines. A call didn't go his way and he swung down with the side of his fist hitting the telepphone. If memory serves me right, olater in teh week , or a press conf. somewhere down teh road he comments that it was teh most expensive phone clal he ever made. Again if memory serves me right he was fined like $10,000 for hitting that telephone by the NCAA!

Just a historical correction on the Bobby Knight slap of Joe Hall on the side of the head. It wasn't from a UK win over him. It occurred on December 7, 1974 in a game at Bloomington in which IU beat us by 24 and it could have been worse. As I've heard the story, towards the end of the game, with IU up by a huge margin, Knight was chewing out an official over a call that he didn't like and Joe Hall said, "Way to go Bob, let him have it" or something to that effect. Knight then turned on Hall and said, "Don't you ever talk to me during a game!" (And, up to this point, they had been friends and hunting buddies). To which Joe Hall said, "Bob, I didn't mean anything by that." At that point, Knight cufffed Hall on the side of the head and said, "I didn't mean anything by that either."

Joe Hall took offense to that slap, and rightly so. It was a public humiliation, or an attemp at it. Certainly clearly unsportsmanlike. I have always thought that this particular incident fueled UK's 92-90 upset of the 31-0 and top ranked Hoosiers in the Mideast Regional Finals in Dayton, Ohio later in that season. Moreover, it changed the UK-IU dynamic forever. In fact, if you look at Knight's record at IU since 1974, you will find his record was dismal against UK. Through December 1974, Knight had a 5-0 record against UK. After that, his record was a losing one against UK and he finished his career with an overall losing record against UK. For a Hall of Fame coach and the winningest college coach of all time, that is a testament to UK and also to the how Knight's temper awakened the sleeping giant (UK) with respect to IU. Prior to that, Ray Mears' Tennessee teams were probably considered a bigger rival that IU was to most UK fans.

To say that Knight carries a decades old grudge against UK would be a vast understatement. ESPN and everyone should realize that he has no "journalistic" objectivity whatsoever with regard to UK and any pronouncements about UK from him should be regarded as nothing more than bitter propaganda from Knight.

I am certain that the success of UK this season is grating on Knight greatly this year, as it always does when we are having a good season. I'm sure Pat Forde, the other "objective" ESPN analyst is also suffering equally. At least, I hope that they both are. They deserve it.

That's a heck of a story Bill, i heard bits and pieces second hand but what you say sounds like the story i did hear. He was a nut job at a early age that's for sure. What would compel him to do such a thing especially to a guy like Joe Hall who always has been a gentleman.

Wildcat Bill, You told it the way I remember it, except they were fishing buddies instead of hunting buddies. And according to Cawood's account on radio, UK asst, Lynn Nance, a former defense instructor for the FBI, immediately got in Knight's face and read the riot act to him.
According to Cawood, Knight wanted no part of Nance. Later, Nance took the coaching job at Iowa State, and took UK player Bob "Frog" Fowler with him. Bob Fowler is now deceased. Died like age forty-four.

Bluecat, you are exactly correct in your comments. To be honest, I didn't specifically recall if they fished, hunted, or did both together. I should have said "hunted and/or fished together". And I purposely didn't add the part about the then assistant coach Lynn Nance, but it is true that he almost went after Knight (I think that it was reported that he had to be restrained) after the incident and he was a former FBI agent (or was reported to be). I'm sure he could have handled Knight easily. Of course, in Bloomington, that could have incited a riot.

Suffice is to say, the bad blood flowed as of that day between Knight and UK. No love has been lost either way since then either. It remains a shame that ESPN glorifies and gives that no good so and so a platform to spew his worthless opinions. I guess with Digger Phelps and Knight, ESPN can now be considered The Home for Washed Up Coaches That UK Once Owned. Maybe they'll hire Dale Brown too to make it a Trifecta.

I'm sure it has lowered the fascination of ESPN by a lot of Cat fans since they hired Knight. I know it has me.

Wouldn't THAT be a hoot! Dale and Bob can sit there and talk about Knight's comments on year before an NCAA game -- something like "I was really worried about playing LSU, but then I looked over and saw Dale Brown sitting on that bench and I knew everything would be all right".
