What a game she played, had to make her Dad happy.
Somehow, amidst the chaos, Makayla Epps found clarity.
In the second overtime period against No. 13 Mississippi State Thursday night, and the game tied 90-90, Epps had just missed a potentially game-winning shot. Jelleah Sidney ripped down an offensive rebound as she was falling out of bounds, and somehow bulleted a pass back inbounds. The ball skirted off dozens of grasping fingers like an oversized pinball before Epps, in one fluid motion, snagged the ball and got a shot off as time expired.
One finger raised in the air and a grin on her face the size of her 42-point performance, Epps sprinted down the court with her teammates trailing behind, victorious.
Her 42-point game was a new career high for the sophomore, and was one point away from tying Jen O’Neill’s program record for most points in a game. And if the final play was chaotic, then the non-Epps portion of Kentucky’s offense was at least disorderly: Taking away Epps’ 18-of-30 performance, the rest of the Wildcats shot 18-of-57.
Most importantly, those 42 points led the charge for Kentucky to dramatically take down MSU in double overtime, 92-90, after the Wildcats gave up a 12-point second-half lead.
“Crazy. Complete craziness,” Epps said of the final seconds. “Jelleah Sidney – sometimes she has the tendency to throw the ball really hard at us, and she threw it really hard, and it was bouncing off faces and noses and ears and then I looked up and it was right there. Go get it, Epps!”
