Kentucky needed an “X” receiver in the worse way. The “X” position is the outside pass catcher and is usually manned by an athlete that is bigger in stature. UK landed an enormous receiver on Monday as former Michigan State Spartan Tre’Von Morgan announced his intentions to transfer to UK. Morgan is listed at 6’6, 220 lbs. on the Spartans official roster.

Rivals and ESPN ranked the Massillon, Ohio product as the No. 1 receiver in Ohio coming out of high school. He recorded 37 receptions for 691 yards and 12 touchdowns as a senior. Morgan also played defense where he racked up 9 tackles including a tackle for loss. He redshirted at MSU following knee surgery in 2019. His first collegiate catch was a 26-yard touchdown reception against Penn State.

Tre’Von Morgan is a prototypical X receiver that possesses a combination of preferred size and athletic ability to be an instant impact player if ruled eligible. Most of Morgan’s projection is based on his high school tape which saw the playmaker dominate high-level Ohio competition. His Massillon team advanced to the state championship as a senior. Here is my quick analysis:

— High points the football, can be seen making 50/50 ball touchdown catches. Red Zone weapon that can win jump ball scenarios. Fights for the football.

— Played come in slot, which is unique given his size. Was effective in both the vertical and short passing game.

— Hand catcher. Natural in the catching process.

— Long strider with good top-end speed. Upper body strength to separate at the line-of-scrimmage.
