Lou Michaels, a stalwart tackle during the era of one-platoon football, a member of the College Football Hall of Fame, and 13-year veteran of the National Football League, passed away Tuesday in his native Swoyersville, Pa., at the age of 80.

“UK Athletics has lost one of our all-time greats in the passing of Lou Michaels,” said Kentucky director of athletics Mitch Barnhart. “He was an incredible competitor during a time when players played both offense and defense. As a UK retired jersey honoree, a member of the College Football Hall of Fame and an All-Pro player in the NFL, Lou was one of the most honored Wildcats in the history of UK football. Our condolences go to his wife, Judy, and their children and family.”

I remember him playing in the NFL and he was special. You had to be special back then when you played on both sides of the ball.

I remember him mostly for kicking field goals and extra points. He was with Pittsburgh, Baltimore and Green Bay when he and Lou (the toe) Groza was kicking for Cleveland. They always seemed to be near the top of the rankings in field goals. That's back before the soccer type kickers came on the scene. Just step back and kick it with their special shoe, or tie the toe of the shoe up so you kicked it with a flat surface.

He was nominated for the Heisman Trophy which was a big accomplishment.

I didn't realize he was 80 until my wife reminded me I was 75. [Frown]
