Jon Hoke knows his South Carolina defense has much more to prove despite their promising start last week.

The Gamecocks co-defensive coordinator was brought on by coach Steve Spurrier this past February to turn around a defense that had sunk near the bottom of the Southeastern Conference last season.

South Carolina was last in the SEC with 14 sacks and 12th in the 14-team conference with 19 turnovers a year ago. Both areas showed improvement in the Gamecocks' 17-13 victory over North Carolina last week.

Hoke wants things to pick up even more Saturday night when the Gamecocks (1-0) open SEC play against Kentucky (1-0).

"We were happy to win. We were happy with the takeaways. But we need to play better," said Hoke, Spurrier's former defensive coordinator at Florida who spent the past 13 years as an NFL assistant before rejoining the head ball coach.

I watched some of South Carolina's win over North Carolina in their season opener. I was left unimpressed and was a lot of improvements and mistakes that needed to be corrected. I felt pretty good about UK beating them in the 2nd game of the season.

Then, I watched Kentucky play its first game and I saw the same thing.

South Carolina has a solid running game. UK has its best LB on suspension and another starting LB doubtful for the game.

Kentucky has more quality, big threat, receivers on this year's team than they have ever had before. South Carolina's starting DB is doubtful for this game.

Who will have the upper hand? It is a home game for South Carolina. Advantage USC.

Kentucky was getting beaten badly on the edges during their fist game and fell apart, when they put in a running QB. The game cocks have a running QB that they can plug in. Advantage USC.

A tale of two halves for the UK qb. Yes, Towles has the talent. Does he have the "it" factor between the ears? The young man played like Cool Hand Luke in the swamp, last season, and lost his confidence and missed easy reads during the last half of the season.

I am not saying that UK doesn't have a quality O line or that they don't have good RBs. But, where they can have mismatches is in the passing game. If Towles has a mediocre game, they will crash and burn.

I would not bet on the Cats, based on their performance in the opening game. My head says that South Carolina will win by anywhere from 7 to 14 points.

My heart says that if Towles can play like the returning starter that he is and utilize all the weapons that he has, then the Cats can win by 7 to 21 points.

Yes, it is way early in the season, but I don't understand why UK's QB laid an egg in the 2nd half of the opener. He wasn't playing against top ten competition. I just don't get it. I hope he starts playing two halves of ball. His team needs a leader at QB.
