Patrick Towles has to have better command of the passing game after completing 16 of 34 passes for 257 yards and three scores with one interception.
He had strikes of 35 yards to Garrett Johnson and 37 yards to Jeff Badet to open the 21-0 lead and his 5-yard pass to Blake Bone made it 33-10 with 3:47 left in period three. However, he also overthrew open receivers and underthrew others. His interception when he had a receiver open helped fuel Louisiana-Lafayette’s comeback.
“It counts. It’s one. We got the best record in the country right now. We’re 1-0 and we’re moving on,” Towles said. “We’ll learn from it. We had a really good start early. We didn’t stay consistent, but we made plays when we had to and that’s really encouraging.”
Stoops said Towles did good things but also has a lot to improve on even though he made it clear Towles is his No. 1 guy by never going to redshirt freshman Drew Barker in the second half when the offense struggled.
“I think he got a little out of sync when he maybe overthrew a couple early, and then he started under throwing it and just got off a little bit,” Stoops said. “But it's not all on him. He'll improve. It's a good starting point. You know what, it's good to be in a tough game like that and let him go through some adversity and some tough plays and then come back and do what we have to do to win.”
