It’s officially official. Jim Harbaugh is the new coach of the Michigan Wolverines. As you can watch from highlights above, in his welcoming press conference Harbaugh was cool, calm and collective using jokes to quickly dissolve any tension in the room. In fact, any recruit watching was probably googling contact information after the presser to find out about the new Michigan football program.

Harbaugh said on recruiting “Like you know your name, I know Michigan football and believe in Michigan football. That will not be a hard job.”.

As I watched, I became worried that the Toledo, Ohio native would cause a dent in Kentucky’s recruiting plan by going straight for the Ohio State jugular by recruiting Ohio players for his team. That in turn would have effects on Kentucky, who currently has 22 players on its roster who are from the state of Ohio.

Then I looked at his roster history at Stanford.

Only a handful of players came from Ohio in his four years coaching there. In fact, only a handful of players came from the East coast in general. His roots lie in the west, a place Kentucky rarely looks for players

Another thing to look at is what type of coach Harbargh is He does not play the same brand of football as the rest of the country. He likes the prototypical NFL size guys that play fundamentally sound football. He is capable of running the fun small guys with speed who make impossible plays possible, but his brand of football is more about power, size and precision.

As the head coach of Michigan, you have to recruit in Ohio because of the rivalry. However, I don’t believe he will be focused on Ohio as his main ground. Will this hire affect Kentucky? Yes. But no more than any other program looking in Ohio does.

Harbaugh will get recruits wherever he goes. He will have Michigan back to where they used to be in no time.

you are right catman, but to play with them we
have to out recruit them. Stoop and Marrow will
do that some as well.
