We also have some depth at the tackle position too that is going to help.

Senior tackle Mike Douglas thought Kentucky’s defense would be better this year and he’s even more convinced of that after the opening 59-14 win over UT-Martin even if the Cats did give up 398 yards.

“I feel like as a defensive unit we have come along good and as a defensive line we are all trying to push each other and create competition within our own positions. It’s good,” said Douglas, who had a quarterback sack among his four tackles in the first game.

Douglas started three games as a redshirt freshman in 2011 and had played in all 24 games the last two years as a reserve. He had 28 tacles, including five against Mississippi State, last season. He got the starting nod against UT-Martin and is part of what coach Mark Stoops hopes is a productive five-man rotation at tackle.

“I am definitely proud of not giving up. My one goal for this year is leave here with no regrets and leave it all on the field. That’s how I want to go out personally, but it is not over yet,” Douglas said as UK prepares to host Ohio University Saturday afternoon. “I don’t think it was ever really tough when I was not playing as much as I  hoped. Some people take different roads and I just had to make my own. I feel really good about it. Even when it was tough, I just tried to stick with it.
Regie Meant had two sacks the first game and Douglas believe Cory Johnson, Melvin Lewis and Matt Elam will combine to give UK a solid defensive presence in the middle of the line.

“I know the group as a whole, we are going to be rocking. That is what I was saying about the competition, which is really good. There are so many different combinations you can put together in there at tackle,” Douglas said. “You should go all out all the time. That is the way you should always play. Coach (Jimmy Brumbaugh) is going to look out for you. He is not going to try and kill you. In practice, he might try to kill you. But in the game, he’s not and wants to keep you fresh as long as he can.”
