This is a fairly lengthy story, so if you get bored easily, it won't hurt my little feelings if you skip it. An old TCDer, BlueCollarMan, has a Facebook page and we are "Friends" there. Last week, he posted, "When did the state stop sending notification that your drivers license will soon expire?" This was news to me, so I checked, and sure enough, mine had been expired 16 months! Yes, I know it is my responsibility, but it never entered my feeble old mind. I motored (illegally) over to the Madisonville court house, where it is just as difficult to get in as to board a plane. Once I gained entry, I handed my license to the only clerk there. She informed me that it was expired, and I informed her that was why I was there. She then informed me that it had been expired long enough that I would have to take the written test. I said okay, and she informed me that they only do them Mon, Tue and Wed, and they would be closed that Monday, and I should come back Tuesday. I went home, once again illegally, and made trip #2 Tuesday morning. I was then told that their printer was down and I'd have to come back later. I went home again and made trip #3 that afternoon, only to learn that they administer the test only from 8:00 until 11:30 in the morning. Wednesday morning I made trip #4 and was there when the doors were unlocked. Went through security again and one of the guards told me their software was down. I went in anyway and one of the clerks came out and asked if anyone was there to take the written test. My hand shot up and she took me back and turned me over to a State Police employee. I had looked the handbook up and taken a practice test on line, and passed the test handily. Then back out to the clerk, where she entered my info into "the system" and said, "You can now legally drive, but the software is still down, and you'll have to come back later to get your license. She actually called me at about noon telling me the system was up and running. 28.2 mile trip #5, one way. This time, the guard with the scanner started laughing when he saw me and waved me on through without scanning. He said he thought we knew one another well enough that he trusted me. So, after several wasted hours, 280 miles of driving, $20 and a lot of frustration, Old Norm is a legal driver for another 4 years.

That's terrible having to make 5 trips! And one simply because their printer was down??? That ain't right.

I do remember my previous license expired without me knowing it, but only by less than a month.

In the state of Indiana where I have lived the last 30 years now, they have a DMV office in every county. The one I usually use is only open on Tuesdays and Thursdays but I have the option to go to any DMV in the state!
