Note that the overwhelming majority of money flowing out of Washington is in the form of entitlement payments... robbing from one set of taxpayers to pay another set.
Seven of the top eight outflows are either entitlements, or not within the constitutional bounds of the federal government. Take those away, and the federal expenses would shrink by $5.23 trillion. Of course, that would include "third rail" programs like Social Security and Medicare, so if we leave those in place, we would still reduce expenses by a whopping $3.4 Trillion.
This chart should open your eyes, and make you angry. We are spending ENORMOUS sums of money on things the federal government has NO BUSINESS spending money on.
Of course, the real problem is that entitlement programs are not part of the budget process; they just grow and grow and grow. The only items subject to budget cuts are the actual ligitimate functions of the government, like defense.
Thus, we are in deep doo-doo, with no real way out.
