Charlotte Hornets coach Steve Clifford plans to spend the rest of the preseason looking at different combinations while trying to adapt to the loss of forward Michael Kidd-Gilchrist to a right shoulder injury.
The team announced that Kidd-Gilchrist was scheduled to undergo surgery Tuesday night to repair a torn labrum. The team isn't saying how long he'll be out, but an injury of that magnitude could sideline him for the season.
Kidd-Gilchrist, who also dislocated his shoulder Saturday night against Orlando, made the decision to have surgery after consulting with team orthopedist Marcus Cook on Tuesday.
Hornets coach Steve Clifford said the injury is "a hit because he impacts winning," but said the injury will give a chance for others to emerge.
Kidd-Gilchrist won't be easy to replace.
The Hornets gave him a four-year, $52 million contract extension this offseason knowing he's their top defensive player, someone who is regularly matched up against the opposition's go-to scorer in the fourth quarter. At 6-foot-7, Kidd-Gilchrist is able to guard a number of positions effectively.
