Indeed. It is a mell of a hess.
I really don't know where to lay the blame for this miserable season. The talent is there, but the cohesion and fight are missing. The basketball IQ and fundamentals are sometimes glaringly missing.
Who is ultimately responsible? Cal is. He recruited them, he coaches them, he calls the plays. But man, there is something rotten in the Craft Center.

Unless this team somehow does a complete 180, we'll be lucky to get twenty wins before the SEC tournament. It looks like we'll need to win the SEC tournament for a chance to get embarrassed in the NCAA tournament.

I honestly feel it is all Cal. I think they guys don't want to play for him and have no confidence in him. Guys are probably not happy about lack of playing time, and can't figure out why. What the heck has happened to Ware. First Cal was playing him, then not, then playing him again, and now he's been MIA for the last 3-4 games. Collins probably doesn't know what he needs to do. The offense was so stagnate today and the defense is horrendous. Cal kept Oscar in toward the and with 4 fouls and as a defensively liability. Other GOOD coaches would have been doing offense for defense. He never went zone even though we were in foul trouble and were terrible at keeping them out of the lane, and the fact they do not look to shoot 3s. UGA on the other hand played mostly man but nicely mixed in some 1-3-1 that we had no clue what to do against it. He calls a timeout and we come out of it and run a horrendous play for nothing. I was so tempted to have a big sign at the game with me that said "Texas, please take my coach." What another waste of a season by him.

ukman, they ran the 1-3-1 extended one play, and Livingston ran the baseline for a dunk. That ended that.
What happened to Ware? The same thing that happened to Theiro, and Collins, and Onyenso... forgotten.
Its a mystery. But it sure sucks to try to figure it out.

They ran a 1-3-1 for multiple possessions. Livingston got the baseline dunk on 1. The others we stood and did not get great shots. Toppin settles for a couple jumpers, Oscar hit a deep 2 luckily, reeves missed an open 3, shot clock violation on one. They ran mostly man but mixed it in.

I am not saying Cal is blameless for this season, far from it. But I think there is more wrong with this team than just the coach.
I believe that most of us, maybe all, misjudged the talent of this team. I don’t believe there is one player on this team that could be a starter for an NBA team.
I love Oscar but he is not the player of old. I can’t help but wonder if NIL has something to do with that. He certainly doesn’t display the hunger and intensity he had in the past.
C J has been a huge disappointment.
Wheeler’s weaknesses have been exploited by many.
I guess I could go on stating the obvious, but what Tip said is very true, the ultimate responsibility lies with Cal.
Maybe he’s like Oscar, he has lost his hunger and intensity. That being said, I don’t believe for a minute it’s his lack of coaching ability. For goodness sake, he’s a hall of fame coach. If he doesn’t play zone, it’s not because of lack of knowledge. It’s because man to man defense is what (like many other coaches) he prefers and believes in. Saying he doesn’t know how to coach shooting or free throws shooting is similar to saying he can’t coach free throw defense. Some, not all, of the criticism of Cal’s coaching ability is simply ludicrous.
I have no idea how Cal’s mind works and disagree with many of his coaching decisions. Then again, I have not made my living being a successful coach at multiple schools.

I can't take watching anymore. I watched the cats during commercials of the Phoenix open golf tournament. Cal's unwillingness to adjust has gotten me disinterested.

I have folled them since the 1965 season and this is the worse string of seasons I can remember. The last 3 should have never been played they were so bad. The only time we win is when we're making good percentage shots and we lose when our percentage is low. The only decent one on the floor today was Reeves. Wallace looked like he was afraid to shoot or he was getting a payoff by a bookie to fix the game I'm not so sure Oscar will be invited to the green room for the draft. You can never depend on Toppin, he might score a bunch and he be MIA. I don't think we would have done any better with CJ or Wheeler. Really there is no one ready to be drafted on this team but Oscar will probably be picked up before the end of the draft. We've only got 5 frosh coming in and maybe we will have 8 left from this miserable team. But I would bet we have 2 or more transfers.

I just saw where Oscar is driving a new Porsche. I guess you can afford it when making 2.75 million in NIL money.
I wonder how this affects team chemistry.
I edited this to add a disclaimer, I’m not sure how accurate the 2.75 million NIL money is. [ 02-12-2023, 09:18 AM: Message edited by: handycat ]

Handy, I’ve often wondered if Oscar is an issue. The dude is beloved by fans, and gets 90 percent of the attention from fans and media. I wonder if there is jealousy in the ranks. Just my $.02

At times I’ve wondered that as well. I’m tickled to death we have him but body language and play have seemed a little suspect at times.

This is what CBS sports has to say about our postseason chances:
"The NCAA Tournament will not feature Kentucky this season barring a late-season surprise, and we as fans of the sport will be all the better for it. There's not a more frustrating watch this season than the underperforming Wildcats, who play with no real urgency and couldn't mount a respectable defense even if Robert Shapiro was on the UK staff."
Unfortunately, I agree with them.

Ouch. That is pretty damning.
But, I can't argue. The defense is the most mystifying part. We are ALWAYS soft on shooters, and cannot defend a ball screen or go over a pick to save our lives. And anybody with half a handle can take it to the paint with ease.
Defense is focus, effort, and communication. We don't do any of those, and it is just sad to watch,
