Same old story. It will never change.

Wife's Mad. Told me we never talk anymore. And just last nite while watching super bowl told her 2 or 3 times to get me a coke and popcorn. Also told her not to forget to take out trash in the morning. Ain't that something. Also told me I was too indecisive. Can't figure out what to do about that. One nice thing I guess. She called me a pro crastinator. Don't know what a crastinator is but I guess I'm a good one for her to call me a pro. Gonna wait til tomorrow to look that up though. I love her but somrtimes can't help but thinking I should have told uncle Junior to keep his coon hound pup and stevens double barrel and also his youngest daughter.

I was so hoping to see a different offensive scheme with more shooters on the floor, but Cal just will never change. No spacing, no screens, and continued bad angles for post passes. Zero creativity to his offense and any coach worth a salt knows how to defend his “dribble drive” or whatever it is that he is trying to run. I would love just once to see a scissor cuts in UK’s offense especially with Frederick/Reeves on the court together.

Add to that his determination to run offense for a non-offensive threat in Toppin is mind boggling when he has OFFENSIVE threats on the floor.

You can’t make this stuff up.

And mark my words Cal will talk about defense being the reason they lost in his press conference not offense.

Coach you allowed 62 points in 40 minutes. With the talent on your roster that should win you 100% of your games.

Very disappointed in the lack of offensive plays designed to get our shooters open. Same old Cal. Dribble, dribble, dribble and throw up a prayer. Free throws killed us again. Had this game won twice if we make the free throws.

We will never win another championship with Cal as coach. I would love to have to eat those words at the end of the year, but for that to happen Cal would have to totally change his coaching philosophy and actually try to learn so new stuff and think through an offense that will actually work for his team. I don't see that happening. He is way too stubborn and prideful.

I wish Cal had the fire and drive to win these early games like Izzo has. It is almost as if he thinks early losses are good. I have never bought into that theory.

My take on the players:

Offensively and defensively, Tshiewbe and Wallace were superstars.

Wheeler disappointed, especially in OT.

Toppin, Ware, and Collins were non-factors. Did the big Nigerian guy play?

Our two shooters sure didn't help much.

Offensive game overall: Poor. MSU's defense was really good, but we should be able to get open looks. ALL of our shots were contested in the last 8 minutes and both OTs. I am really, really, really tired of the outside weave. When you have a returning all-American power post player and two outstanding shooters in Reeves and Frederick, you run a different offense. This team reminds me of the team we had with KAT and the Harrison twins.

Defensive game overall: Poor. Every time Hauser wanted an open shot, he got an open shot. How can that happen? And those breakdowns in OT where we just gave up a wide-open lane to the bucket shows we have a LOT of work to do here. I liked the fact that Cal is using some FC press, but we still get confused on defense in the half-court.

Why does Cal refuse to play Fredrick and Reeves at the same time??? It's easy to shut down one guy. Put both of our best shooters on the floor together for Pete's sake!

MSU got those open shots alot of times because of good spacing and offense. They almost always had the lane area open which left lanes for drives and kicks. We almost always have someone at the high post taking away any drives to the basket, unless we run the simple weave play. It's just sad to see these teams we have had run these simple offenses that have no creativity, or movement. It's like Cal thinks he has to dumb it down, or he doesn't know any better. I sure would think he could come up with better offenses than he runs. I honestly think there are several on here who could have better offensive sets for this team. Not handle all the other stuff that goes with the job, but know better offenses for this team; yes.

Paul, it's also easy to shut guys down when you just have them stand in the corner. And smart defenses are not going to help on Wheeler. They will stick with the shooter, and they won't even have to move because Cal will have our guys stand there. Or we run them off screens in the circle play, but it is never to get them an open look. Or if it is he should be screaming at his guys about setting weak screens. We are one of the worst teams in America at setting solid screens, and have been for years.

Two major things that cost us.

1. FREE THROWS
2. MISSING LAY UPS FROM THE SIDE

Just like last season and other seasons, we can't make a lay up. We don't understand the angle of the shot.

We could run a heck of a pick-and-roll offense with Tshiewbe and Wallace, or Frederick, or Reeves. But that "circle jerk" offense just doesn't do anything for anybody.

Space the floor. Move the shooters continuously through the lane. Focus on the pick-and-roll. Pass it into Tshiewbe, and then out to a shooter.

This ain't rocket science.

I am frustrated by a terrible performance, but it is mid-November, and we are playing the best of the best. I won't complain if Cal turns this team into the beast it could become.

Tip,

I would be nice if your last statement would turn out to be true, but we have a long history that proves that it will not occur.

Cal is who he is and unlike Coach K he is unwilling to change his coaching philosophy. When Coach K took over the Olympic team he learned to play zone from Boeheim, he learned new offensive philosophy from Mike D’antoni. He changed his recruiting style when he saw what Cal was doing . He took all those back to Duke and implemented both and got himself a few more championships.

Cal refuses to do and or learn anything different.

For goodness sake, zone the out of bounds underneath vs going man to give up dunk after dunk, year after year. I told my wife that there was a 75% chance they would give up a dunk to tie the game to go to overtime. It's mind boggling to me. [Frown]

I said it last year and look up the numbers, but any time UK plays a ranked team or a team from a Power 5 conference I just expect them to lose now because that has been the history over the last 6 years.

Trey,

Yeah, the numbers don't lie. Pretty grim. But how to get Cal to change? He has a frickin' lifetime contract.

The only way he steps down is when HE decides to. While we might want to be careful what we wish for, I sure am ready for something different. If he can't pull a Coach K and adapt new strategies, then his future as a UK coach is the same: A lot of great recruits, a decent number of wins, and at the end, a lot of disappointment. Oh, and a couple of NBA contracts. Rinse and repeat.

The program has become simply a vehicle for getting kids to the NBA, and to get Cal a lot of money and fame. It sure isn't a program designed for fans, unless you happen to be an NBA fan.

I will say I listened to his post game. I will admit I was wrong and he didn’t blame defense for the loss. He even mentioned this team should score 80 plus points a game.

What I disagree with is he said some players passed up open looks. I don’t agree with that. He didn’t run offense to get them open looks. You could tell Izzo told his team to never leave Frederick or Reeves to help stop a driver. They stayed glued and Cal made no adjustment which he never does.

He also did the typical, well I forgot about so and so. Said he should have played Reeves on second OT to go get buckets. Uhhhhh yeah.

I thought you were getting paid to make that decision during the game, but he always comes to that realization AFTER a loss.

Yes, Michigan State was unranked when this game was played. I think they were just outside at 26. I watched them give Gonzaga all they wanted and a little more.

My guess is that this will the the only week that Michigan State will not be ranked. Probably in the top ten at least in some weeks. They are a very, very good team IMO. . We’ll see.

I think we will be just fine. One loss very early in the season. I’ll wait and see.

In most cases I would agree, but there were so many things that have been issues in the past that were evident in that game. It just makes me concerned that we are going to have a year where we waste good shooters and don't utilize them to maximize their talents, and in a way that makes our team as good as it should be. I don't want us to have to rely solely on Oscar, which is how I think Cal operates. If I start to see actual plays run to get open looks for Reeves and Fredericks, and plays that involve better spacing and more movement, then I will change my tune and have much more hope. Tonight would be a good game to try some different plays that have more movement and screens, but it will probably just be a game where our talent just carries us to a win over a lesser team.

After I posted above, I saw that Texas absolutely wupped Gonzaga. Maybe Mich St playing them close was not as big a deal as I thought.

I’m sure MSU will be ranked because the Big Ten is mediocre again this year. IU is probably the best team in the Big 10 this year

Texas ran Gonzaga out of the building. Cal obviously dosen't watch film. He's got to go.

He bragged back in 2015 that he doesn't watch film. That was before the Wisconsin game. He said they hadn't watched any. When Kamisky was told that he said they uad watched about 6 different games. And guess what? It sure showed. If it wasn't for his recruiting, which is very good, he would be a mid level coach at best. Personally, I'd be thrilled to see him gone. Tired of always falling short of realistic expectations each year. Heck, I might take Holloway over him. He totally outcoached Cal last year.
