Immanuel Quickley’s NBA career is off to a great start in New York, much better than CBS Sports predicted when the Knicks selected Quickley with the No. 25 pick back in November.
“He’s the reigning SEC player of the year and shot 42 percent from 3-point range, but this is nearly 30 spots higher than I expected,” Gary Parrish wrote in his NBA Draft recap. “His upside just does not match this place in the draft, but he could be a good shooter if nothing else. Grade: D+”
If nothing else, Quickley is currently the fifth-ranked rookie in the Kia Rookie Ladder over at NBA.com and was leading all rookies in the Player Efficiency Ratings earlier this week. The former Wildcat averages over 12 points per game off the bench and he’s sixth in the entire league in free throw percentage behind guys like Chris Paul, Steph Curry and Damian Lillard.
It’s fair to say his D+ grade was just a bit outside; however, Quickley keeps it close to him at all times as motivation.
“I have that screenshotted,” he told the Big Apple Buckets podcast on Tuesday’s new episode. “I have a camera roll album of all stuff that motivates me and that’s one of them. Definitely screenshotted and saved on my phone.”
Quickley’s motivation folder is a variety of photos he uses for fuel. “It’s not all negative stuff,” he added. “There is positive stuff in there too, like goal setting and things like that and affirmations.
“But some of the stuff that’s in there is definitely things where people have said I couldn’t do this or couldn’t do that. I just try to use that to prove the haters wrong and try to prove myself right.”
