Here at KSR, we specialize in silver linings.
In regards to “things that no one would ever think of unless they were really trying to find something positive”, it turns out that the ‘Cats are 2-0 when going head-to-head against the children of some former NBA greats.
On January 5, Kentucky defeated Vanderbilt on the road in a close matchup, barely escaping with a 77-74 victory. One of the starters on that team was Scottie Pippen Jr.
Pippen Jr., the son of NBA legend Scottie Pippen, had a self-proclaimed “chip on his shoulder”, as Kentucky was his dream school and he was not recruited by Cal. He played rather well despite the loss, posting 18 points, eight rebounds, and eight assists against the ‘Cats.
Count that as one victory against NBA kiddos.
Then, on Saturday night, Kentucky swiped a victory over LSU at Rupp, breaking a bit of a losing streak and looking pretty good doing it.
Shaquille O’Neal’s son, Shareef O’Neal, plays for LSU. This is O’Neal’s first season in the SEC, as he started at UCLA last season before transferring to play for the Tigers. Unlike Pippen Jr., O’Neal was not nearly as effective for his squad, adding just two points and two rebounds in 10 minutes off the bench.
Pippen Sr. was on hand to watch his son’s matchup, whereas it appears that Shaq was not in Lexington.
Are these weird coincidences? Yes. Do they mean anything? Probably not. Actually, most definitely not.
But are they something positive to think about? Yes, yes they are.
