Toppin: “Once we buy into team basketball… that’s when we’ll start winning”

What’s wrong with Kentucky’s offense? The answer is a lot of things, but Jacob Toppin diagnosed the problems as “buying in” and “consistency” issues.

Asked how things should look when UK’s offense is playing to design, Toppin said, “We need to drive, we need to find the open man, we have to create for each other and sometimes we don’t do that. Once we buy into that, once we buy into team basketball, once we buy into finding the open man, giving up a good shot for a great shot, that’s when we’ll start winning basketball games.”

In a follow-up question, Larry Vaught asked why players wouldn’t be bought in at this stage in the game, five games into January. Toppin replied, “I think everyone is dialed in, I just think we have to become more consistent because sometimes when we’re playing basketball some people tend to go off check and try to do their own thing and try to play ‘me’ basketball and that’s what we don’t need. That just comes with experience as we start playing more, we’ll figure it out, that’s it. We gotta figure out a way to stay consistent and play team basketball.”

A lack of toughness hit Kentucky in the loss at Auburn, Toppin said, and it was a point of emphasis in Calipari’s postgame comments to the locker room.

“We are supposed to be the tougher team every time and today we weren’t. We did play with effort but not enough toughness. In the first half, they had 12 offensive rebounds, which is unacceptable for any team. We need to find a way to get tougher and play with more grit.”

My wife has been telling me that same idea and I believe it is true.

It's amazing what a little better shooting accuracy would do for their Win-loss record. [Wink] Cal said at the beginning of the season this is a bad shooting team. He said I have no shooters. Maybe he picked up the wrong guys???

One would think Cal has been around enough to know he was recruiting players that have shooting deficiencies.
