WE have several guys that showed they can shoot tonight. Most of the points came from the four horsemen, I mean guards. That would be Boston, Clarke, Askew and Mintz. If we play a big lineup we have 4 guys who could switch out at guards but when we are playing small?, we have 3 guards who are tall anyway.
Even Sarr can hit the midrange shot as he showed tonight. Jackson showed glimpses of what he will really be like and Sarr was a slow starter but I expect him to pick it up.
And the 2 forwards, Fletcher and Ware will be something by conference time. Then there's Toppin and Allen. They both showed they will be producing down the line.
And then there's Brooks who is still injured. That makes 11 good players by my count. This looks to be the deepest team we have had in a long time, Maybe 1976.

I wasn't too surprised by what I saw last night. These smaller nonconference games are critical to the maturing of most of Cal's teams. They have to get their feet wet by facing an opponent besides themselves. We committed a lot of turnovers. It's good to see Cal trying to throw some press out there. HE should really consider talking to one of his friends that runs the press a lot. We don't press frenetically yet. I'm hoping they stick with it and improve on what we have.
Our length is going to give a lot of teams trouble. 6 blocked shots last night and they're just getting started!

This is amazing! It looks like we finally have a group of guys who all know how to play basketball. Guys who know what to do with the ball and how to move on offense. This is a refreshing change of pace. Way to go, coach Cal!
There are no Kahlil Whitneys or Jared Vanderbilts or Wenyen Gabriels on this team. No one looks like a deer in headlights when they get the ball.
And it looks like there are no Hamidou Diallos or EJ Montgomerys on this team. Everyone on this team can score other than having to dunk the ball.
I think the sky is the limit with this team.

I'm not worried about the turnovers. 15 is not bad when 4 or 5 of them was taking steps before they started their dribble. If they hadn't done that5 the other mistakes would have been about 10. Not bad for the first game. And as was already said, most of these guys can shoot the ball. The PG spot will be covered well as soon as Askew gets a better hold on it. Mintz showed he was ready the minute he went in the game. He will get his share of PT. The two that look to be the weakest are Toppin and Allen. But they are not afraid to get in there and do what they need to do. There's a good possibility that Cal will have an 11 man All Star team by the end of this season.
