Part of an ongoing series on influence in the Southeastern Conference, AL.com found that the University of Kentucky kept coming up in discussions with athletic directors, agents, coaches and sources in the industry.
One unnamed source said, “Kentucky is the center of the SEC universe.” (Print the t-shirts.)
A surprise given the attention to football in the conference, UK’s football is better, but its SEC influence comes from basketball and the leadership side. John Calipari is undoubtedly the biggest name in the conference in basketball, Mitch Barnhart is the current chair of the SEC athletic directors and of the NCAA men’s basketball committee, and Eli Capilouto is the president of the SEC presidents.
The AL.com story profiles all three right here, and all three were ranked among the SEC’s most influential people. Dr. Capilouto was first at No. 5, then Barnhart at No. 9, followed by Calipari at No. 13.
