Kentucky coach John Calipari signed a 10-year, lifetime contract with the Wildcats last year. But that doesn’t meant that the Calipari-to-the-NBA chatter faucet turned off, with The New York Post’s Mark Berman writing that league sources indicated that the New York Knicks could have a shot to pull the Wildcat coach.
After all, the Knicks signed Leon Rose as Knicks president and William Wesley — known throughout basketball circles as World Wide Wes — helps to advise the team. But long-time coach Larry Brown, Calipari’s mentor, told The Post he had a hard time seeing Calipari leave the Wildcats.
“I think he’s so happy where he is,” Brown said. “He’s done such a great job and [is] so beloved there and he’s helping kids. Those things mean something to him. I know he’s been asked before to coach in the NBA a number of times. He hasn’t given it a second thought because of how comfortable he is where he is.
“He has a chance to win the national championship every year because of the type of players he’s allowed to recruit,” Brown said. “I can’t imagine him leaving. I really can’t. You read his name because of his relationship to Leon and relationship to Wes but we’ve never once talked about him going to the Knicks. But I do know how competitive he is. He didn’t like not succeeding in New Jersey.”
Calipari coached under Brown at Kansas, and then again with the Philadelphia 76ers after Calipari’s lone NBA head coaching job with the New Jersey Nets went sour after he went 72-112, including a 3-17 mark in his third season when he was fired. And Brown said the two talked multiple times per week.
