The offseason is in full swing for John Calipari and his Kentucky Wildcats...sort of.
With sports being greatly affected due to COVID-19, Calipari now has to navigate what may be the most challenging offseason he’s ever faced in his Hall of Fame coaching career. Now is when he should be getting his players for the NBA Draft, but that’s been complicated due to the virus outbreak, which has all but killed the pre-draft process.
With no combine, private workouts and in-person interviews with NBA decision-makers, it’s going to be tough for prospects to get a proper evaluation where they stand and if they should return to school or go pro.
On Tuesday, Calipari held a teleconference with media to discuss all the happenings around his team and how he’s attempting to prepare them for testing the NBA waters. He also discussed the potential return of All-American Immanuel Quickley, who could end up being Kentucky’s point guard next season if he returns to school.
“Would we be a better team, him (Quickley) being a point guard on this team coming back? Yes. But that’s not why he should make a decision. His decision is, is this the right time? Am I ready to succeed in that league? Am I mentally ready? Which I know he is. Am I physically ready? Yeah. Have I mastered my skills the way I need to? That’s the decision he would have to come back to. I think, again, one of the great kids that I’ve ever coached. One of the most grounded young men that I’ve ever coached.”
