Topic: All Time Best Kentucky Team..

My team:
Center- Dan Issel- Tough, smart and could shoot from anywhere on the court. No center like him that played for Kentucky...
Power Forward- Jamal Mashburn- Strong agile and played both ends of the court.
Small Forward- Tayshaun Prince- One of the best all around player Kentucky ever had and could play multiple positions..
Shooting Guard-Rex Chapman athletic and could shoot from any spot on the floor.
Point- Rajon Rondo best rebounder, passer and defensive point i have seen at Kentucky and still managed to shoot 49% as a freshman and sophomore.
Coach- Adolph Rupp, no contest...

Prophet, The players of today are bigger, stronger, faster and play competition far better than they did back that far. Probably not all want to hear that but it's true. It isn't just basketball either it's every sport...

IF you don't believe CMD, look at the size of alot of your starting linemen on both side of the line in football! Todays players would outweigh yesterdays players by 80-100 Lbs.

George Mikan played for the Minneapolis (Minnesota) Lakers back in 1949-1956. He was considered a giant at the time at 6'10" and was unstoppable. I don't think there is any pro team now, that doesn't have at least one player taller than that.

You can't fault either lineup and I could probaby come up with a third one that would include Rick Robey and Pat Riley.

Of course it's true. A person would be a fool to suggest otherwise and thus the folly of trying to pick an "all-time" anything. Using that criteria Babe Ruth wouldn't make such a baseball team; Johnny Unitas wouldn't be considered for NFL; Johnnie Weismueller -- to emphasize the point probably not Mark Spitz -- in swimming. PG - Macy (over Rondo because you don't want Rondo in the game at the end)

Comparing yesterday's players to today's, I think those in the past were A LOT tougher than those of today. Just thinking of the 78 finals against Duke - I can remember all the pushing and shoving and elbow throwing that went on in that game. It seemed like a fight would break out at any minute. Today's players are soft compared to those of many years ago. Just my opinion.

PC, That's the time you want Rondo in the game as his quickness can break down most any one they put on him. He can find the open man for the shot or take it to the basket. Macy could shoot but didn't have the athleticism or quickness to get his own shot. If he played today he would probably have to be a off guard because of his foot speed..
If your talking because of his free throw ability there is no one to have on the line at any time of the game better than Macy but he has to get there first.

C: Issel/Magloire
PF: Mashburn/Walker (although Patterson is about to make this lineup!)
SF: Prince/Givens
SG: Delk/Chapman
PG: Rondo/Minniefield
Could you imagine the defensive pressure a backcourt of Rondo and Delk could apply? Or having both Mash and Prince able to take it inside AND shot the trey? And not many players will want to bang all 40 minutes against Big Dan and Jamaal...

Patterson's freshman year was the best of the bunch but I am struggling too much to leave any of these guys out given how good Mash and Walker were as upper classmen. Rondo's game was too unpolished at UK for me to want him running the point on an all-time great team, although he was a stud.

Cotton Nash is the best pure athlete to ever step on our court. Any all-time team is incomplete without him! Where to put him? Try any position!

kynut---some of our younger posters never heard or seen him play---they just dont know how really good he was

cc, A few facts about Cotton Nash.
1. He was listed as a 6'5" Center/Forward although i have heard tell he played some shooting guard.
2. He averaged 22.6 points per game for his 3 year career.
3. His field goal percentage for 3 years was 41.7% with a high of 45.2% and a low of 37.4% which is hardly that impressive especially for a inside player.
4. His free throw percentage was 73.7 for his three years at Kentucky which isn't that great either.
5. His rebounding average was 12.3 for 3 years which is impresive for a 6'5" inside player but in todays times he would probably have to play a shooting guard.
6. He averaged 2.5 assists per game which is ok but not outstanding.
His stats are really not that good to be considered to make the all Kentucky team imo. Maybe you or others can shed some light on him that i may be missing.

I dunno, CMD.
Imagine if UK could land a player that averaged 22 pts, 12 boards, and almost 3 assists per game, for three years. Sounds like All-American material to me, regardless of the era.
I was too young to see Cotton Nash. My earliest memories would be in the early 70's, hence Issel is my 'oldest' player on the list.

TT, Patterson shot over 57% as a freshman against far superior talent than what was around in the time Nash played. Nash shot 41% playing a inside position. To put into perspective Rondo shot 49 % as a point guard and everyone thought he was a terrible shooter.
I guess it's who you are and what you want to believe but i find it extremely hard to believe that Nash could compete against the athletes of today just as it will be for todays athletes to compete against athletes in the next 20 years..

At 6'5" Nash was forced to play the 5 because we had no one else to do it. For most of his career he was literally a one man team aND WAS ALWAYS DOUBLE OR TRIPLE TEAMED......not just some of the time but ALWAYS! I appreciate the stats comparison with Prince because the stats are overwhelmingly in Nash's favor, but even they do not tell the whole story of Cotton Nash. Cotton was not only a great basketball player but also an outstanding all-conference baseball player and a football player who UK wanted to play end on the football team as well as baseball and basketball. Trust me when I tell you that Cotton was the smoothest athlete UK has ever had in any sport. When he ran he looked like silk in motion....more like a gazelle than a human. Plus, he was voted All-American three times (how many 3 time AA's have we had?). I'm sorry that our younger fans never got to see him.

Bama Cat, you might want to drop Lamb and add Alex Groza to your list. He wasn't an All-American three years in a row for nothing, one of only 3 players to ever receive such an honor at UK.

Nash did have Ted Deeken(sic) playing with him who was a very good player if I remember right. as an aside - believe Deeken stole Nash's girlfriend or vice versa and big fight ensued which didnt help the team for a while! ![[Smile]](smile.gif)

Handy, it's also amazing that many of the names from the 2008 post are still posting today!
I didn't realize it was so old as i first started reading it. Then I noticed one of the posts was mine, and i thought someone hacked my account! That's when i realized it was from 2008.

TCD has been a "very" good group of posters that really get along which is what makes all of you so very special. I just wish we could all get together sometime but realize that it would be next to impossible to do.... I don't remember one instance in all these years where "anyone has made the hint of a derogatory remark about any TCD'er and that means a awful lot...God Bless all of you!
