Okay I was not expecting freshman Tyrese Maxey to have the type game he had against Texas Tech Saturday. I thought for Kentucky to win, he would need to be at this best.
Kentucky did win but it was not Maxey’s best game.
He had seven points but was just 2-for-10 from the field. He had four rebounds, three assists and one steal but also had five turnovers in a game where every possession really mattered. Kentucky coach John Calipari was especially infuriated in the second half with UK nursing a lead when Maxey put up a deep 3-pointer early in the shot clock.
Even though freshman Kahlil Whitney quit the team a day earlier to leave the Cats with just eight healthy scholarship players, Calipari didn’t mince words about Maxey’s play after the game.
“Decision making has got to get better,” Calipari said on his postgame radio show. “Tyrese really, really struggled today. I made us go back at him. I told him, ‘I will lose this game but you are going to find out where you are. ‘
“He didn’t get that rebound late. I told him there was a lot of stuff he didn’t do but that’s good for him.”

Maxey not ready for the big show? He has been the one guy who usually excels in the Big Games. This one was a case of home-town jitters, in my mind. I will take Maxey in a Big Game any day (outside of the state of Texas).

I disagree. As I said before, he always seems to be looking for the glory shot/play. IMO, he doesn’t make the players around him better. Value to the team? I’ll take both Hagans and Richards over him in a Big Game or any other time for that matter.
He probably has more potential than the others and age/ maturity may make him a much better player but I don’t think he is there yet.
However, he is much cuter than the other players. At least that’s what the female UK fans I know say. [ 01-28-2020, 03:17 PM: Message edited by: handycat ]

I think that's the nature of being a shooting guard in Cal's system. If you're not the point guard, you're usually shooting when you get the ball. Not much room to try and make others better. With that said, I think I like Quickley better. [ 01-28-2020, 03:22 PM: Message edited by: PaulCat ]

Not quite fair comparing two seasoned sophomores to a freshman, but I do like all three guards.
If Maxey was not given the green light to shoot, he wouldn't stay on the court. Clearly, Cal likes him for more than shooting (his defense can be stifling, and he rebounds damn good for his size), but I would be comfortable with either Maxey or Quickley taking the crunch-time shots. Better still, lob it up there to Richards, but that is a whole different story.
